La redazione di Sound Magazine incontra i The Plight, gruppo punk/rock’n'roll britannico. Hanno all’attivo due ep e un album di debutto, “Wind Of Osiris”, fresco di stampa.
Risponde alle domande Lewis, uno dei due chitarristi.

Ciao ragazzi, è un piacere avervi qui su Sound Magazine. Vorreste presentarvi ai nostri lettori?
Lewis: Abbiamo iniziato nel 2004. come quartetto. Abbiamo pubblicato un demo all’inizio del 2005, seguito da un ep di 7 pezzi su Thirty Days Of Night Records nel 2006…poi si è aggiunto Stoz (seconda chitarra) e Sean (basso) ha sostituito Liam e abbiamo fatto uscire “Black Summer” su Visible Noise l’anno seguente. Finalmente abbiamo un album fuori, èd è una cosa buona. Nel mezzo delle uscite dei nostri lavori, siamo andati in tour ogni volta che abbiamo potuto. Penso che siamo andati in tour 11 volte in Inghilterra, un mix di concerti diy e dei locali più “mainstream”. Siamo stati in Europa una sola volta, per alcune date con Converge e Coliseum, ed è stato fantastico…

Avete finalmente pubblicato “Wind Of Osiris”, il vostro primo album su Visible Noise. Vorresti parlarcene?
Lewis: L’abbiamo registrato con Jase Sanderson, penso nell’ottobre del 2008. Sarebbe dovuto uscire a inzio 2009 ma non è successo, ma ora è fuori! Ed è un bene per noi perchè possiamo andare avanti e continuare a comporre. Stoz (seconda chitarra) ha realizzato tutto l’artwork, con la colorazione e lo smisurato contributo del nostro amico Luke (Deathcola Design). “Winds…” è una collezione di canzoni che abbiamo composto dopo “Black Summer”.
Qualcuna è vecchia, qualcuna l’abbiamo finita prima di registrare.

Oggigiorno sembra che alcuni gruppi hardcore tendano a mischiare il loro suono con il rock’n'roll. Al contrario voi sembrate un gruppo rock’n'roll mescolato a hardcore. Cosa ne dici? Qual è il vostro background musicale?
Lewis: Direi che per inquadrarci meglio siamo un gruppo punk rock che suona rock’n'roll. Tutti noi siamo stati in gruppi hardcore diy in una forma o nell’altra…ho conosciuto così Stoz perchè abbiamo suonato agli stessi concerti coi nostri vecchi gruppi, specialmente locali o al nord. Per Sean è stata una storia simile. Ma hai ragione – sembra che ci sia un po’ di trend al momento. Sembra che molti gruppi vogliano mescolare il rock’n'roll al hardcore. A me non importa.

Il vostro precedente ep “Black Summer” è stato acclamato sia da critica che dai fans. Avete sentito qualche pressione nel comporre il nuovo materiale?
Lewis: No.

Recentemente siete andati in tour con i Outcry Collective. Com’è andata? E’ stata una bella esperienza?
Lewis: Siamo andati in tour un paio di volte da quel momento, ma si è stato figo. Sulla carta siamo simili e possiamo sembrare come gruppi simili, ma in realtà siamo distanti musicalmente (per quanto riguarda le influenze). Ci siamo divertiti e sono dei ragazzi in gamba. La prima notte che li abbiamo incontrati, quasi tutti abbiamo dormito nel loro furgone dopo essere stati in una discoteca schifosa, ce n’erano 10 tutti incastrati tra di loro. Io ho preferito dormire  nel nostro furgone. Nonostante non ci fossero cuccette nel nostro, non ho dovuto svegliarmi pensando di essermi addormentato in una bara!

Verrete in tour in Europa? Penso che ci siano i fans qui in Italia che vi stanno aspettando.
Lewis: Abbiamo visitato brevemente l’Europa una volta (Austria, Ungheria, Germania). Vogliamo tornarci. Non so se ci stanno aspettando in Italia, probabilmente no – ma vogliamo venirci comunque. Non ci sono mai stato.

Quali sono i vostri progetti futuri?
Lewis: Andare in tour ogni volta e ovunque ne abbiamo la possibilità. Comporre e registrare di nuovo. Per il momento non abbiamo piani precisi ma le cose cambiano sempre…

C’è qualche gruppo che vorresti supportare consigliandolo ai nostri lettori?
Lewis: Momento dei nomi: un pò di buoni gruppi hardcore inglesi…The Horror, The Sex Maniacs, Cold Ones, Burning the Prospect, Skiplickers, Throats, Turbowolf, Starfish Drillaz…(hardcore/punk) e poi Human Fly (riff puri), Gentlemens Pistols (retro rock), Sam Barrett (folk da Yorkshire con una dodici corde). Direi che può bastare.

Bene Lewis, grazie mille per l’intervista. Vorresti dire qualcos’altro ai nostri lettori?
Lewis: Per quanto ti riguarda, ti ringrazio molto per l’intervista. Se tutto va bene ci vedremo presto. Per quanto riguarda i lettori grazie per leggere. Se tutto va bene verremo presto nel vostro paese, prometto di portare il rum…

Hi guys, it’s a pleasure to have you here on Sound Magazine. Would you like to introduce yourselves to our readers?
Lewis: We started back end of 2004, as a 4 piece. Released a demo early ‘05, followed by a 7 track E.P on Thirty Days Of Night records in ‘06… then Stoz joined (additional riffing) and Sean (rolling bass) replaced Liam and we did “Black Summer” on Visible Noise the following year. Now we’ve finally got an album out, which is nice. In-between the physical documents of sound, we’ve been touring any opportunity we get. I think we’ve toured the U.K about 11 times, a mixture of DIY tours and the more “mainstream” venues. We’ve Been to Euro-land once, for a few dates with Converge & Coliseum, which was amazing…

You’ve finally release “Wind Of Osiris”, your first full length on Visible Noise. Would you like to talk about it?
Lewis : We recorded it with Jase Sanderson, Oct 08 I think. Was supposed to be out early 09 but didn’t happen, but now it’s out! Which is good for us because we can move on and continue writing. Stoz (rhythm guitar) has done all the artwork, with additional colouring and a immeasurable contribution from our friend Luke (deathcola design). ‘Winds’ is a collection of songs we wrote after “Black Summer”. Some are old, some we finished just before recording.

Nowadays it seems that some hardcore bands tend to mix their sound with rock’n'roll. On the contrary you look like a rock’n'roll band mixed to hardcore. What would you say? What’s your musical background?
Lewis: I’d say to better understand us we’re more of a punk rock band paying rock ‘n roll music. All of us have been in DIY hardcore punk bands in some shape or form previously… that’s how I met Stoz because our old bands would share the same gigs, mainly local or around the north. Was a similar story with Sean. But you’re right – it does seem to be a bit of a trend right now. Seems like a lot of bands want to rock ‘n roll hardcore tag; I really don’t care for it.

Your previous ep “Black Summer” was well acclaimed both by critics and fans. Have you felt any pressure writing the new material?
Lewis: No.

You’ve recently been on tour with Outcry Collective. How did it go? Was it a nice experience?
Lewis: We’ve toured a few times since then, but yeah it was cool. On paper we’re a similar band and we might appear like similar bands, but in reality we’re pretty far apart, musically (in terms of influences.) We had a good time and they are nice boys. The first night we met them, nearly all of us slept in their van after some shit disco we’d been to, there was about 10 of them all crammed in together. I opted for our van instead. Despite there being no bunks in ours, I didn’t have to wake up thinking I’d fallen asleep in a coffin!

Are you going to tour in mainland Europe? I guess you have fans here in Italy that are waiting for you!
Lewis: We’ve visited Europe briefly once (Austria, Hungary, Germany). We want to come back. I’ve no idea if they’re waiting for us in Italy, probably not – we’d love to come over though. I’ve never been.

What are your plans for the future?
Lewis: Touring whenever/wherever we get chance. Writing & recording again. Right now we have no solid plans but things are always changing…

Is there any band you would like to support by suggesting it to our readers?
Lewis: Name drop time: good British hardcore punk… The Horror, The Sex Maniacs, Cold Ones, Burning the Prospect, Skiplickers, Throats, Turbowolf, Starfish Drillaz…(hardcore/punk) and then Human Fly (pure riffs), Gentlemens Pistols (retro rock), Sam Barrett (Yorkshire folk on a 12-string). That’ll do for now.
