Sound Magazine ha il piacere d’incontrare la band indie-rock statunitense Uzi & Ari, che ha all’attivo tre album: “Don’t Leave in such a hurry” (2004), “It is freezing out” (2006) e “Headworms” (2008).
Risponde alle domande Ben Shepard, cantante e chitarrista del gruppo. Di seguito riportiamo l’intervista in lingua originale.

Ciao ragazzi, bello avervi qui su Sound Magazine. Volete presentarvi ai nostri lettori?
Ciao! Siamo sei tipi amichevoli dagli Stati Uniti, che suonano insieme musica pensierosa dal 2004.

Avete fatto uscire l’album Headworms lo scorso ottobre. Volete parlarcene?
Abbiamo fatto un album sul più fondamentale dei problemi della condizione umana, l’esistenza. Suona più pesante su carta!

Siete stati paragonati a Thom Yorke, Postal Service e The Album Leaf. Come descrivereste il vostro sound?
Penso che quei artisti si troverebbero benissimo sulla nostra tavolozza dei colori, ad ogni modo apprezziamo musica che va da Caribou a Leonard Cohen fino a Henryk Gorecki, sono sicuro che puoi sentire un pò di loro nel nostro sound.

Da quando avete iniziato il gruppo avete attraversato molti cambi di formazione. Come ha influito sul sound del gruppo?
Sono sempre stato il principale compositore e performer sugli album, quindi gli aggiornamenti dell’equipaggiamento per lo studio e l’acquisizione di strumentazione hanno giocato un ruolo prominente nello sviluppo delle canzoni, penso.

Qual’è la vostra più grande influenza nel comporre musica? C’è qualche gruppo che vi ha ispirato?
Sono ispirato da molti bravi artisti, così come da film e da musicisti. Penso che Surfjan Stevens sia uno dei compositori più talentuosi dei nostri tempi, ultimamente ho ascoltato “Avalanche” religiosamente.

Proprio ora siete nel mezzo di un tour europeo. Come sta andando?
Il tour è stato fantastico, un sogno. Abbiamo incontrato così tante persone gentili e altruiste che ci hanno tremendamente aiutato a portare avanti la nostra causa. Grazie a tutti voi!

Avete progettato di registrare qualcosa di nuovo?
Penso che non avrò una nuova registrazione per un paio di anni, il mio processo (di scrittura) è abbastanza ingombrante e inefficente! Però si ho diverse canzoni su cui sto già lavorando.

C’è qualche gruppo che vorreste consigliare ai nostri lettori?
Non immagino di avere informazioni privilegiate di cui i vostri lettori siano privi in quanto a musica, ma mi piace molto “Tripper” di Efterklang.

Hi guys, nice to have you here on Sound Magazine. Would you like to introduce yourselves to our readers?
Hi! We are six friendly folks from the US, playing thoughtful music together since 2004.

You’ve released your album Headworms last October. Would you like to talk about it?
We made a record about the most fundamental of problems of the human condition, existing. It sounds heavier on paper!

You’ve been compared to Thom York, Postal Service and The Album Leaf. How would you describe your sound?
I think those artists may well find their way onto our pallete, however we also enjoy music from Caribou to Leonard Cohen to Henryk Gorecki, I’m sure you can hear a little of all of those in our sounds.

Since the band started you went through several line up changes. How did this affect your sound?
I have always been the chief songwriter and performer on the records, so upgrades in studio equipment and instrument acquisition have played a more prominent role in the development of the music, I think.

What’ s your main influence in composing music? Are there any bands that gave you inspiration?
I’m inspired by a good many artists, as well as films and musicians. I think Sufjan Stevens is one of the most gifted composers of our time, I have been listening religiously to ‘The Avalanche’ lately.

Right now you’re in the middle of an european tour. How is it going?
The tour has been a fantasy, a dream. We’ve met so many kind and selfless people that have tremendously helped to further our cause.

Have you planned to record something new?
I don’t imagine that I will have a new recording for a couple of years, my process is quite cumbersome and inefficient! But yes, I have several songs in the works already.

Do you have any band you would like to suggest to our readers?
I can’t imagine that I have any privileged information that your readers aren’t privy to when it comes to music, but I rather enjoy Efterklang’s ‘Tripper.’

Uzi & Ari, band californiana capitanata da Ben Sheperd, che tanto piacque a chi cercava punti di contatto fra Radiohead e Postal Service, arriva a Roma Giovedì 12 Febbraio per la presentazione del suo terzo album Headworms, distribuito in Europa dalla Own Records.
Il concerto, organizzato dal Traffic ma locato presso il Sinister Noise, è un’imperdibile occasione per ascoltare dal vivo uno dei più interessanti gruppi indie contemporanei.
La serata sarà aperta dai Formanta!, nuova band della scena romana che presenterà brani da “F!”, Ep d’esordio dai toni new wave-indie rock.
