Sound Magazine ha il piacere di incontrare Terra Naomi, simpatica cantautrice statunitense arriva al grande successo grazie al brano “Say it’s possible”, presentato inizialmente con un video su Youtube.
Ora ha all’attivo tre album ed uno in uscita nel 2011.
Di seguito riportiamo l’intervista in lingua originale.

Ciao Terra e benvenuta su Sound Magazine. Come sta andando la tua estate?
Ciao! Va tutto alla grande! Sto lavorando alle canzoni del mio prossimo disco e non vedo l’ora di venire in Italia tra un paio di settimane!

Sono passati quattro anni dal Virtual Summer Tour e dalla tua consacrazione in rete. Come riassumeresti questi ultimi 4 anni?
Sono stati anni pazzeschi!! Non avrei mai immaginato di vivere esperienze simili, sia in positivo che in negativo! Sono passata dal suonare in piccoli locali negli Stati Uniti, guidando io stessa da uno stato all’altro, al trasferirmi a Londra e suonare al Wembley Stadium di fronte a 80.000 persone. Poi ho lasciato la casa discografica, il mio management e il mio produttore, e mi sono tornata di nuovo a Los Angeles per intraprendere un percorso creativo diverso, quindi è stato un periodo di transizione e pieno di cambiamenti, con molti alti e bassi. Insomma anni non facili, ma molto soddisfacenti.

So che hai potuto vivere sulla tua pelle l’esperienza con le major e so che ora invece ti avvali di Pledge, un’organizzazione che permette agli artisti di raccogliere fondi mettendo in vendita il proprio materiale.
Vuoi spiegarci come stai utilizzando questo innovativo strumento?
Pledge Music permette agli artisti di finanziare i propri progetti grazie al contributo dei fan, facendo beneficienza allo stesso tempo. Io ho messo in vendita online un po’ di oggetti esclusivi – partendo dai cd autografati fino ai biscotti fatti in casa (solo per gli Stati Uniti!), disegni, concerti privati, la possibilità cantare con me nel mio album… cioè tutto quel genere di cose che potrebbero interessare le persone che amano la mia musica. Loro acquistano questi oggetti ed è così che finanziamo la registrazione dell’album. Fino ad ora abbiamo raccolto il 103% del budget e continueremo fino a quando non entrerò in studio a ottobre. Continuo a postare video esclusivi, mp3 e blogpost sul sito di Pledge, in modo tale che le persone che contribuiscono al mio album facciano una divertente esperienza interattiva in questi mesi che ci separano dall’uscita dell’album. È davvero un modo divertente di realizzare un disco!

Ti sentiresti quindi di consigliare Pledge sia a musicisti emergenti che a gruppi già affermati?
Si, senza dubbio. Anche diversi artisti conosciuti stanno usando Pledge Music per finanziare i loro progetti. Ho notato che anche artisti sotto contratto discografico si servono di Pledge. È davvero divertente per i fan e permette agli artisti di realizzare dischi che l’etichetta discografica non si può permettere, ma che ai fan piacciono. Di questi tempi le etichette non vogliono spendere soldi, ma gli ascoltatori vogliono e hanno bisogno di nuova musica dei loro artisti preferiti.

Parlaci del tuo incontro con Elisa. Quando avete deciso di duettare insieme e come mai è stata scelta proprio “River” di Joni Mitchell?
Ho sentito parlare di Elisa per la prima volta da alcuni fan che avevamo in comune. Dicevano che gli ricordavo lei, quindi l’ho ascoltata e mi è subito piaciuta. Quando sono venuta in Italia lo scorso Dicembre, le persone che organizzavano il mio tour sono entrate in contatto con qualcuno del suo staff e hanno organizzato un incontro. C’era il desiderio da parte di entrambe di cantare insieme e abbiamo deciso di incidere “River” perché tutte e due amiamo Joni Mitchell. Credo che le influenze della Mitchell siano percepibili nel modo in cui entrambe scriviamo e cantiamo. Con Elisa ci siamo conosciute poche ore prima di registrare, abbiamo provato qualche volta la canzone e le nostre voci si miscelavano molto bene.
È stato tutto molto facile e naturale, un’esperienza creativa davvero meravigliosa.

Farai qualche altro duetto con qualche cantautrice? Con chi ti piacerebbe suonare?
Ci sono un sacco di artisti con cui mi piacerebbe lavorare. Spero che con la realizzazione del mio nuovo disco possa darmi le occasioni per farlo. Non vedo l’ora di mandare il disco agli artisti che amo e fargli sentire la mia musica realizzata nel modo in cui ho sempre voluto. Spero che questo porti a nuove collaborazioni.

Stai per tornare ad esibirti in Italia: presenterai live anche dei brani inediti? E’ sempre un work in progress o sei abituata a scrivere i tuoi pezzi in momenti particolari?
Si! Ho un sacco di nuove canzoni e non vedo l’ora di condividerle con il mio pubblico italiano! Trovo gli italiani molto musicali e creativi, aperti ad ascoltare nuova musica. Quella italiana è secondo me una cultura molto artistica e creativa, è come se alle persone non importasse di capire fino in fondo tutte le parole dei testi che canto, perché riescono comunque ad immedesimarsi nell’emozione e nel sentimento che sto esprimendo mentre canto. Amo tutto ciò, mi fa sentire bene come artista, l’essere capita da quel punto di vista.

Oltre al tour quest’anno che altri progetti hai in cantiere?
Sì, registerò il mio album a ottobre e poi cercherò di trovare un modo per distribuirlo. Sarà divertente dato che sto valutando tanti modi diversi di distribuire la mia musica, non solo attraverso le classiche vie di distribuzione delle etichette. Mi sto rivolgendo a marchi e compagnie, esplorando nuovi percorsi per far arrivare la mia musica alle persone di tutto il mondo.
È eccitante! Spero inoltre di passare più tempo con la mia famiglia, con i miei genitori e i miei fratelli. Sto cercando di trovare più tempo per loro. I mesi passano e mi accorgo di non passare abbastanza tempo con le persone che amo… e quel tempo non si può riavere indietro!
Quindi sto cercando di trovare equilibrio nella mia vita, per viverla al massimo.

Hi Terra, welcome on Sound Magazine. How’s your summer going?
Hi! Everything is great! I’m working on the songs for my new album and getting very excited to come to Italy in just a couple weeks!

Four years have passed since your Virtual Summer Tour and since you rose to fame. How would you summarize these last four years?
It’s been quite a crazy ride!! I’ve experienced things I never could have imagined, both good and bad! I went from playing small shows around the US, driving myself in my car, to moving to London and playing Wembley Stadium in front of 80,000 people. And then I left the label, parted ways with my management and producer, and moved back to LA to pursue a different creative path, so it’s been a time of change and transition and many ups and downs. Not an easy time, but very rewarding.

In the past you’ve had experiences with major labels, while now you’re using Pledge, a music company which allows the artists to collect funds selling their material. Would you like to explain how you’re using this innovative tool?
Pledge Music allows artists to fund their own projects by engaging the fans and contributing to charity at the same time. I posted a number of exclusive items online – ranging from signed CDs to homemade cookies (US only!) to original art, private concerts, singing on my album…all kinds of things that would interest the people who love my music. They purchase these exclusive items and that is how we fund the recording of the album. So far we have raised 103% of the budget and will keep going until I record in October. I post exclusive videos, mp3s and blogs on the Pledge website, so people who contribute to the album get a fun interactive experience for the months leading up to the release of the album. It’s a really fun way to make an album!

So would you recommend Pledge to both emerging musicians and already famous bands?
Yes – definitely – many well-known artists are already using Pledge Music to fund their projects. I have even seen artists on record labels making albums with Pledge. It’s really fun for the fans and allows artists to make albums that the record label might not support, but the fans love. Labels do not want to spend any money these days, but people still want and need new music from the artists they love.

Let’s talk about your collaboration with Elisa. When did you decide to sing together and why have you chosen Joni Mitchell’s song “River”?
I first heard of Elisa through mutual fans – people said that I reminded them of her, and so I checked out her music and loved it. When I came to Italy last December, the people organizing my tour reached out to someone who works with her, and they arranged a meeting. We talked about singing a song together and decided on River because we both love Joni Mitchell. I think you can hear Joni Mitchell in the songs we write and the way we both sing. We met just hours before we recorded, sang it a few times, and our voices blended so well – it was very natural and easy and such a wonderful creative experience.

Are you planning collaborations with some other singer-songwriters? Who would you like to work with?
There are so many artists I would love to work with. I’m hoping that my new album helps that happen. I can’t wait to send it to some of the artists I love and let them hear me and my music the way I want it to be heard. Hopefully that will lead to more collaborations.

You’re about to come back performing in Italy: will you also sing some new and unreleased songs? Is it always a work in progress or do you usually write your songs in particular moments?
Yes! I have so many new songs and i can’t wait to share them with my Italian audiences! I find that the people in Italy are so musical and creative and so open to hearing new music. It is a very artistic, creative culture, and I think that is part of the reason I connect so well with Italian audiences. It doesn’t seem to matter what I’m singing about, whether people understand every word – they can relate to the emotion and feel what I’m expressing. I love that. It feels so good, as a performer, to be understood on that level.

Besides the tour, what other plans do you have this year?
Well, I’m recording my album in October and then I will figure out how to distribuite it. That is going to be fun because I’m exploring many different way sto distribuite music – not just the traditional label route – I’m talking to brands and companies and really exploring creative new ways of getting music out to people around the world. It’s exciting! I also look forward to spending more time with my family – my mom and dad and brothers. I’m realyl trying to make more time for that, because it is so important to me and time passes so quickly these days. Months can go by and I realize I haven’t spent enough time with the people I love. You can’t get that time back, you know? So I’m trying to find balance in my life, to live the most meaningful life I can live.
