Sound Magazine incontra i Rise Against, famoso gruppo hardcore politicizzato e attivista proveniente da Chicago, Usa. Hanno pubblicato 5 album e diversi ep. Risponde alle nostre domande Tim McIlarth, cantante e chitarrista del gruppo.

Ciao ragazzi, è un piacere avervi qui su Sound Magazine. Vorreste presentarvi ai nostri lettori?
Tim: Sono Tim.
E’ passato quasi un anno dall’uscita di “Appeal To Reason”. Quali sono stati i responsi?
Tim: E’ stato travolgente come molte persone hanno accolto questo album. Canzoni come Savior, Hero Of War, Re-Education (Through Labor) e Audience Of One hanno veramente toccato le persone, come il resto delle canzoni ovviamente. Quest’ anno è stato una grande avventura che è ancora lontana dal finire, con la gente che lentamente sta scoprendo il disco ancora adesso.
Siete nati come una promessa, ora siete uno dei gruppi punk rock più rispettati al mondo. E anche se avete pubblicato diversi dischi su major, difficilmente siete ritenuti dei “venduti”. Come mai? Penso che la risposta stia nei testi delle vostre canzoni e nell’integrità.
Tim: Non so se siamo stati veramente un fenomeno quando abbiamo iniziato il gruppo, siamo usciti per una piccola fanfara, suonando solo piccoli concerti mentre il disco cresceva. Abbiamo passato anni ad aprire gruppi più grossi e non abbiamo mai trovato alcuna sorta di successo nemmeno dopo che abbiamo firmato per una major. E’ stato il nostro magnifico pubblico a legarsi a noi negli anni e penso che ha anche a che fare col fatto che ci siamo sempre ricordati da dove veniamo.
“Quelli che rendono impossibile la rivoluzione pacifica rendono inevitabile quella violenta”. Queste sono parole di JFK, ma anche la citazione che apre il video di Re-Education (Through Labor). Perchè avete scelto quelle parole?
Tim: Penso che quelle parole riassumano veramente il video e lo mettono in un contesto. Vivendo in un mondo che cerca costantemente di mettere restrizioni al dissenso, la gente non si rende conto di quello che succede quando trattieni con successo il pubblico. La loro rabbia esce in altri modi, modi meno costruttivi, modi pericolosi.
Durante le elezioni presidenziali del 2008, avete pubblicizzato Barak Obama. E siete stati sempre contro Bush, sia come membri di Punkvoter sia come ospiti sulla compliation Rock Against Bush Vol.1. Ora che è diventato presidente, pensate che riuscirà a rimediare a tutto lo schifo combinato da Bush?
Tim: Penso che sia sulla strada per un buon inizio. Mi sveglio ogni giorno felice che John McCain non sia il nostro presidente. Avrei fatto lavorare di più l’amministrazione Bush se fossi stato nella sua posizione, penso veramente che dobbiamo mettere quell’amministrazione sotto il microscopio per poter pienamente imparare dai loro errori. Ho paura che un giorno saranno ripetuti.
Siete anche sostenitori attivi della PETA (organizzazione per i diritti animali), così come siete tutti vegetariani. Il video di Ready To Fall è decisamente esplicito a riguardo, anche se penso vi abbia dato problemi con la censura per averlo in rotazione in tv. Pensi che sia stato un problema di tematiche e immagini forti o solo la paura di mostrare le cose per quello che sono veramente? Che consigli daresti a qualcuno che non è vegetariano?
Tim: E’ l’istinto naturale dei media di non far vedere qualcosa di troppo grafico o controverso. Kerrang Tv ci ha censurato nel passato, ma molte persone hanno avuto le palle di far vedere il video. Leggere dei diritti ha poco effetto, è vedere queste immagini che ti colpisce veramente nello stomaco e inizia a far girare gli ingranaggi nella tua testa. Se i macelli avessero pareti di vetro e fossero messi nei centri delle città, ho il sospetto che molte più persone sarebbero vegetariane. Il nostro video è un tentativo di portare la verità in televisione.
Tornando alla musica, avete in programma qualcosa? Magari un nuovo album?
Tim: Abbiamo due nuove canzoni su un 7 pollici su Fat Wreck Chords, la gente può ascoltare quello. Staremo ancora in tour per questo disco per altri sei mesi, poi ci prenderemo una pausa e ritorneremo quando saremo pronti, ma non voglio trattenervi il respiro per qualcosa di veramente imminente. Faremo un video in autunno per un’altra canzone del nuovo album, non vediamo l’ora.
Ho letto che sarete in Europa con Thursday e Poison The Well. Siete eccitati?
Tim: Si, non vediamo l’ora. I concerti stanno andando sold out, la gente deve sbrigarsi a prendere i biglietti. Poison The Well e Thursday hanno entrambi un nuovo disco fuori, sono vecchi amici e non vediamo l’ora di tornare in tour con loro.
C’è qualche gruppo che vorresti consigliare ai nostri lettori?
Tim: Se vi piace l’ hip hop, ma anche se non vi piace, consiglierei i POS. Un disco incredibile. Altri che mi esaltano sono il nuovo In Flames e il nuovo Propagandhi. Entrambi ritorni in forma per due gruppi pieni di talento.
Ok Tim, grazie veramente per l’intervista. Qualcos’altro da dire ai nostri lettori?
Tim: Grazie veramente tanto ai nostri fans d’oltreoceano. I nostri concerti li sono stati sempre grandiosi ed è fantastico avere così tante persone da così lontano che si interessano al nostro gruppo.
Hi guys, it’s a pleasure to have you hear on Sound Magazine. Would you like to introduce yourselves to our readers?
Tim: This is Tim.
It’s been almost over a year that “Appeal To Reason” came out. What where the responses?
Tim: It’s been overwhelming how much people have embraced this record. Songs like Savior, Hero Of War, Re-Education (Through Labor) and Audience Of One have really touched people, as well as other songs of course. It’s been a great adventure so far this year and it’s still far from over as people slowly discover the record even now.
You were born as a sensation and now you’re one of the most respected punk rock band in the world. Even if you’ve released a few albums on a major label, you’re hardly considered sell outs. How come? I think that the answer lies in your songs and in your integrity.
Tim: I don’t know if we were much of a sensation when we first started the band, we came out to little fanfare, just playing small shows as our record slowly grew. We spent years opening for bigger bands and never really found any sort of success even after we signed to a major. It took our amazing audience sticking with us over the years and I think it also has something to do with the fact that we always have remembered where we came from.
“Those who make peaceful revolution impossible make violent revolution inevitable.” These are JFK words, but also the quote that opens the Re-Education (Through Labor) video. Why did you chose those words?
Tim: I think that quote really sums up the video and puts it into context. Living in a world that is constantly trying to put restraints on dissent, people don’t realize what happens when you successfully restrain the public. Their anger comes out in other ways, less constructive ways, dangerous ways.
During the 2008 presidential election, you’ve endorsed Barak Obama. And you’ve always been against Bush, both as members of Punkvoter and as guests on the Rock Against Bush Vol. 1 compilation. Now that he’s become president, do you think he’ll ever change all the crap that Bush did?
Tim: It seems he’s off to a good start. I wake up everyday happy that John McCain isn’t our president. I would have taken the Bush Administration to task more if I were in his position, I really think that we need to put that administration under the microscope in order to fully learn from their mistakes. I fear that they will be repeated one day.
You’re also active supporters for PETA (an animal rights organization), as you’re all vegetarians. The video for Ready To Fall is definitely explicit about it, even if I think it gave you problems with censorship to have it in rotation on tv. Do you think it was a problem of tough themes and images or just the fear to show how things really are? What advice would you give to someone who’s not vegetarian?
Tim: It’s the media’s natural instinct to not play anything too graphic of controversial. Kerrang TV has censored us in the past, but most people have had the balls to play the video. Reading about animal rights only does so much, it’s seeing these images that really hits you in the gut and starts the gears turning in your head. If slaughterhouses had glass walls and we’re located in city centers, I suspect a lot more people would be vegetarian. Our video is an attempt to bring the truth to television.
Back to music, have you anything scheduled yet? Maybe like a new album?
Tim: We have two new songs on a Fat Wreck Chords seven inch, people can check that out. We’re still touring this record for another 6 months, then we’ll take a a break and regroup when we are ready, but I wouldn’t hold your breath for anything too soon.
We’ll be doing a new video in the fall for another song of our new record, we’re looking forward to that.
I’ve read you’ll be in Europe with Thursday and Poison The Well. Is it true? Are you excited?
Tim: Yes, we can’t wait. The shows are selling out fast so people should pick up some tickets. Poison The Well and Thursday both have new records out, they are old friends and we can’t wait to get back on the road with them.
Is there any band you would like to suggest to our readers?
Tim: If you like hip hop, or even if you don’t, I would suggest P.O.S. It’s an incredible record. Other than that I am rocking the new In Flames and the new Propaghandi. Both incredible return to forms from two talented bands.

Tim: Thanks so much to all of our amazing fans across the pond. Our shows there have been so overwhelming and it’s so amazing to have so many people so far away from home give a shit about our band.
