Intervista con Gaslight Anthem

La redazione di Sound Magazine incontra i Gaslight Anthem nella suggestiva ambientazione del locale Rock’n'Roll a Milano. Il quartetto del New Jersey ha pubblicato 3 album e un ep. Risponde alle nostre domande Alex Levine, simpatico bassista della band americana.

M: Innanzitutto vorresti parlarmi del nuovo album? Come è stato composto e come è stato ricevuto?
A: Abbiamo incominciato a comporre “American Slang” esattamente in questo periodo l’anno scorso dopo essere tornati da un tour enorme, eravamo in tour da due anni e mezzo. Siamo tornati nella cantina dove avevamo scritto altre canzoni e l’album precedente, nel New Jersey. Abbiamo fatto cinque settimane di scrittura e poi siamo andati in studio per altre cinque settimane…oh no aspetta…ahhahah…in realtà abbiamo passato due mesi a scrivere e cinque settimane in studio. Con “American Slang” eravamo un po’ nervosi per la pressione proveniente dal disco precedente “The 59 Sound”, perchè come ogni altro gruppo hai un fanbase, e c’è un’ulteriore pressione perchè non stai facendo un disco soltanto per te stesso ma anche per altre persone, i tuoi fans. Penso che sia stato accolto davvero bene, da quello che ho potuto vedere sono on the road da sei mesi e i concerti diventano sempre più grossi e la gente ci dice solo cose positive quando la incontriamo, ma per quanto riguarda i critici, cerco di non prestarci troppa attenzione.
M: Beh devo ammettere che sono un fan e che sono totalmente preso da “The 59 Sound”, e quando ho sentito per la prima volta “American Slang” è stato strano perchè avevo ancora in testa il vecchio album, ma ora mi piace anche “American Slang”. Penso che abbia solo bisogno di più ascolti.
A: Si, penso sia il commento più frequente che abbia sentito. Molte persone sono legate a “The 59 Sound”, quindi niente sarà a quei livelli, almeno a primo impatto.
M: Vi seguo dai tempi di “Sink And Swim” e ho visto la progressione. Penso che in questo album siate più vicini alla musica roots e il rock’n'roll, mentre i precedenti avevano un tiro più punkeggiante. Quali sono state le vostre influenze su quest’album?
A: Certamente, penso che ogni canzone abbia la sua influenza su quest album. Ci sono influenze dei The Rolling Stones e finalmente abbiamo messo in moto le nostre influenze dei The Clash. La più grande influenza di Alex (Rosamilia, chitarrista) sono sempre stati i The Cure, ma si è innamorato di gente come Peter Green ed Eric Clapton, per questo ci sono riff blues nell’album. Penso che abbiamo preso tutte le influenze.
M: Penso che sia la cosa migliore perchè puoi mantenere il vecchio fanbase e creartene uno nuovo.
A: Si, penso che sia il motivo per cui il nostro fanbase si sta ampliano, vedo gente dai cinque anni di età fino ai sessantacinque anni di età. Penso che sia un buon segno, deve essere un buon segno ahaha.
M: Non ti farò domande su Springsteen perchè penso che siate stufi della cosa. Ma ho sentito un vostro bootleg in mp3 pieno di versioni acustiche e c’era una cover che ha catturato la mia attenzione perchè è di uno dei miei gruppi preferiti, “Left Of The Dial” dei The Replacements. Che influenza ha avuto questo gruppo su di voi?
A: Penso che quel gruppo sia nella top 5 comune di tutti noi. Abbiamo tutti i nostri gusti, ma diventano comuni quando si tratta di The Replacements o Pearl Jam…
M: Si, avete fatto una cover di “State Of Love And Trust” dalla colonna sonora di “Singles”.
A: Si, per me sono gruppi senza tempo.
M: E la gente parla sempre di Springsteen, Springsteen, Springsteen senza vedere le altre influenze…
A: E’ divertente perchè prima di questo gruppo è stato Brian ad aprirci gli occhi su Springsteen, non è mai stata un’influenza comune, forse sul modo di comporre di Brian.
M: Hai detto che The Replacements sono nella top 5 comune, ma qual’è la tua top 5 personale?
A: The Replacements, The Clash, The Ramones, sai il punk originale del 77…uhm…top 5, top 5…cambia in continuazione…sono un grande fan di Bob Dylan…e i Led Zeppelins, sono cresciuto con i Led Zeppelin e The Who, hard rock anni 70….uhm…Pixies, Pearl Jam…potrei andare avanti ehehehe.
M: Siete in questo tour europeo da?
A: 17 ottobre.
M: E come sta andando?
A: Sta andando alla grande, i concerti sono quasi tutti sold out ed è pazzesco perchè veniamo dagli Stati Uniti.
M: Beh penso che ora che siete diventati più famosi sia più facile fare sold out dalle vostre parti.
A: Si si. L’industria musicale è strana, alti e bassi, va e viene. Nel senso puoi essere su una major e avere tanti soldi dietro di te e stare su ogni cavolo di copertina ed essere il peggior gruppo di sempre. Ma per qualche motivo suoni davanti a migliaia di persone. E io ho sempre questo pensiero per la testa: ” E’ per via del fatto che passiamo in radio e la gente è costretta ad ascoltarci o piacciamo veramente?” Ahahahahah. Penso che sia una cosa di cui non verrò mai a capo.
M: Io suono in un gruppo hardcore ma non ho problemi ad ascoltarvi o ascoltare gruppi simili al vostro, mi piace tutta la musica…
A: Figo. Io ho suonato in un gruppo hardcore, Alex suona in un gruppo heavy metal al momento, Benny è cresciuto con l hardcore e Brian aveva un gruppo hardcore…
M: Avete grandi gruppi nella vostra zona, New York…
A: Si, New York Hardcore, è quello con cui siamo cresciuti.
M: Spero che non verrete mai paragonati a Bon Jovi. E’ del New Jersey, vero?
A: Si, è del New Jersey. Non penso che succederà, non mi vedo a fare quel “wou wou” ahahahaha.
M: Hai detto che ami The Clash, quindi dovrebbe piacerti il primo gruppo di questo tour, i Sharks.
A: Ho un aneddoto divertente su di loro.
M: E’ la prima volta che hai sentito parlare di loro durante questo tour?
A: No no, sono io la ragione per cui sono in questo tour. Quando eravamo in studio a finire “American Slang” il nostro manager si è presentato con una litsta di quaranta buoni gruppi con i link al loro myspace. Ho iniziato no, no, no, no, no, e poi ho sentito il loro primo pezzo ed era grandioso. Sono in contatto con loro da un po’, abbiamo già suonato con loro in Inghilterra a Giugno. Sono ragazzi in gamba totalmente presi dalla musica, e il nostro gruppo ha grande influenza su di loro. Sono uno dei migliori gruppi che ho visto in vita mia ed hanno solo 19 anni…
M: E cosa mi dici di Chuck (Ragan, in tour con loro)?
A: Chuck è Chuck. E’ un eroe. E’ il nostro eroe. E qualsiasi cosa faccia è oro puro, è grandioso, incredibilmente grandioso. Da pazzi, l’altra sera i Sharks stavano suonando una cover di “I Fought The Law” e Chuck ed io siamo andati sul palco a cantarla con loro.
M: E come ci si sente a vedere le proprie foto ovunque per via della pubblicità della Levi’s? Ero a Londra lo scorso ottobre e nel negozio Levi’s di Carnaby St. c’era la vostra foto gigante.
A: E’ grandioso, sono contento del risultato. Molti gruppi fanno cose stupide per le ragioni più stupide. Ci è stato presentato nel modo migliore. E ci sono certe cose che bisogna fare…
M: Beh penso che siate il gruppo perfetto per quella pubblicità.
A: Vestiamo tutti Levi’s, quindi non è stato per niente strano. Molti grandi compagnie ti fanno fare cose strane, fai questo, fai quello, fai questo, fai quello. Tutto quello che dobbiamo fare è indossare jeans e fare foto, una figata ahahahaha.
M: Oltre ai Sharks, c’è qualche nuovo gruppo uscito di recente che ti piace?
A: Si si. Fake Problems, il loro nuovo album è una delle cose migliori che ho sentito quest anno. Mi piacciono i Black Keys, hanno pubblicato un gran disco. Uhm, nuovi album. Direi il nuovo degli Arcade Fire, non è pretenzioso e mi ha aperto gli occhi. Oh si e anche quell’altro gruppo, i The National, sono un gran gruppo e hanno un vibe differente e penso che meritino il successo che hanno perchè se li ascolti e basta non diresti che viaggino su canali commerciali. Mi piace la musica che spacca, buona musica, c’è tanto schifo in giro ahahaha. E’ facile per tutti fare un disco e pubblicarlo, quindi siamo inquinati dallo schifo ahahaahah.
M: Ok. Vorresti dire qualcosa ai vostri fan italiani?
A: Oh si, grazie. Apprezziamo tutto quello che fate, ascoltare la nostra musica, venire ai nostri concerti. Abbiamo già fatto un concerto da headliner davanti a 200 persone, ce ne saranno un migliaio stasera.
M: Avete suonato anche a un festival a Brescia questa estate.
A: Si si, abbiamo suonato anche li, ma parlavo di un concerto da headliner che abbiamo fatto due anni fa.
M: Quello con Frank Turner?
A: Yeah!
M: Amo quel ragazzo.
A: E’ un grande, un compositore pazzesco. E’ reale, è un’artista vero, un compositore vero, e i suoi testi sono incredibili. Invece di parlarti, potrebbe scrivere testi, è pazzesco ahahaha. Abbiamo passato delle notti pazzessche assieme. Una sera stavamo bevendo una birra e ha chiesto una chitarra e ha iniziato a suonare le cover più casuali e gli ho chiesto “c’è qualcosa che non conosci?” e lui: “prova!”. Allora gli ho detto; “Uhm, ok, Jagged Little Pill, Alanis Morrissette, Ironic”. E lui mi ha risposto: “Da dove vuoi che cominci, posso suonare tutto l’album”. E io: ” Fottiti ahahahahaha”. Incredibile.
M: First of all would you like to talk about the new record? I mean how it was written and how it was received.
A: We started writing “American Slang” by this time last year when we came home from a big tour, we were touring for 2 and a half years at the time. We got down back to the basement where we’ve written other songs and the previous record, in New Jersey. So we did 5 weeks of writing and then we went to the studio and there was another 5 weeks…oh no wait…ahahaah…actually it was 2 months of writing and 5 weeks in the studio. So yeah with “American Slang” we were kinda nervous because all of the added pressure from the previous record “The 59 Sound”, because like any other band you have a fan base, and suddenly there’s an added pressure cause you’re make a record not only for yourself but for other people, for your fans. I think it has been received pretty well, from what I can see I’ve gone on the road for the past six months and shows are going bigger, people are saying positive things to us when we meet them, but when it comes to critic I try not to pay attention to that shit.
M: Well I must admit that I’m a fan and I am totally into “The 59 Sound”, so when I first heard “American Slang” I felt a bit strange cause I was still on the previous album, but now I’m also into “American Slang”, I guess it just only need serveral listenings.
A: Yeah I guess that’s the main comment I got back. “The 59 Sound” appealed for all the people so anything else is never gonna be quite there, at first you know.
M: I’ve been following you since “Sink And Swim” and saw the progression. I think on this one you got more into roots and rock’n'roll, while the previous two had a punky vibe. What were the influences for this album?
A: Of course, I think that every song was its own thing on this album. There are Rolling Stones influences and we finally took our Clash influences and put them in motion. Alex’s biggest influences has always been The Cure, but he got into songrwriters like Peter Green and Eric Clapton, so that’s why there’s this blues riffing in the album. I guess we kinda took all the influences.
M: I guess it’s the best thing cause you can mantain the old fanbase and grow a new one.
A: Yeah I guess that’s why our fanbase it’s widing, I see people from age of 5 to the age of 65 at our shows, I guess it’s a good sign, it has to be a good sign ahaha.
M: I won’t ask you questions about this Springsteen thing cause I guess you’re pretty much bored with it. But I listened to a mp3 bootleg of you, full of acoustic versions, and there was a cover that got my attention cause it’s by one of my favourite bands, “Left Of The Dial” by The Replacements. What influences had this band on yours?
A: I think that band is probably one of the top 5 blanket influences for all of us. We all have our different styles, but it all becomes a common place when it comes to The Replacements or Pearl Jam…
M: Yeah you did a cover of “State Of Love And Trust” from the “Singles” soundtrack.
A: Yeah you know these bands are timeless bands to me.
M: And people is always Springsteen, Springsteen, Springsteen, without seeing that there are other influences…
A: Yeah and it’s kinda funny because honestly before this band Brian opened our eyes on Springsteen and it never was a blanket influence on the band, maybe on Brian songwriting.
M: You say that The Replacements were on the common top 5, but what’s your personal top 5?
A: The Replacements, The Clash, The Ramones, you know the original 77 punk stuff…uhm…top 5, top 5…it always changes…I’m a huge Bob Dylan fan…and Led Zeppelin, I grew up on Led Zeppelin, I grew up on The Who, 70′s hard rock…uhm…Pixies, Pearl Jam…uhm I just keep going ehehehe.
M: So you’ve been on this european tour since?
A: October 17th.
M: And how’s it going?
A: It’s going great, all the shows are pretty much sold out and it’s insane cause we’re from the US.
M: Well now that you’ve become more famous it’s easier for you to get sold out there.
A: Yeah yeah. Music industry is strange, highs and lows, ups and downs. I mean you can be on a major label and a lot of money behind you and every freaking cover and be the worst band ever. But for some reason your still playing for thousands people. So it’s always in the back of my mind: “Is it because now we’re on radio and people is forced to listen to us or they just really like us? Ahahahaha. I guess it’s just one of those things that you can never tell ahah.
M: I play in a hardcore band but I haven’t any problems in listening to your band or bands like yours, I mean I like every kind of music…
A: Cool. I played in a hardcore band, Alex is in a heavy metal band right now, Benny grew up on hardcore and Brian was in a hardcore band..
M: You have great bands from that area, New York…
A: Yeah New York hardcore, that’s what we grew up on.
M: Hope you’ll never get compared to Bon Jovi. Is he from New Jersey, isn’t he?
A: Yeah he’s from New Jersey. I don’t think it will happen, I don’t see myself doing that “wou wou” thing ahahahahahah.
M: You said you love The Clash, so you must be into the first band that plays on this tour, Sharks.
A: There’s a funny story about that.
M: It’s the first time that you hear of them during this tour?
A: No no, the reason why they’re on this tour is because of me. We were in the studio finishing “American Slang” and our manager came with this list of good 40 bands with all the myspace links and stuff and I was like nope, nope, no, no, no, and then I heard their first song and it was amazing. I’ve been in touch with them before, we’ve already played with them in June in our England tour. They’re sweet kids totally into music and our band has a big influence on them. They’re one of the best band I’ve seen in my entire life and they’re only nineteen…
M: And what about Chuck?
A: Chuck is Chuck man. He is a hero. He is our hero. And everything he does is pure gold, he’s amazing, unbelievebly amazing. It’s crazy, the other night Sharks were playing a cover of “I Fought The Law” and me and Chuck went on stage singing with them.
M: And how does it feel to have all your images around for the Levi’s thing? I was in London in October and in Carnaby St. there’s the Levi’s store and there was a huge picture of you there.
A: It’s pretty cool man, I’m excited the way it turned out. All the bands do the stupid thing for the stupid reasons. It was something presented to us in a really cool way. You know there are certain things you must do..
M: Well I think you’re the perfect band for that commercial.
A: Yeah we all wear Levi’s so it wasn’t a weird thing. Some big companies want you to make weird things, do this, do that, do this, do that. All we have to do is wear jeans and take pics around, so it’s cool ahahahaha.
M: Apart from Sharks, is there any band you like that recently came out?
A: Yeah yeah. Fake Problems, their new record is one of the best thing I’ve heard this year. I’m into the Black Keys, they have a really cool record out. Uhm new records, I guess the new Arcade Fire, I guess it’s a pretty cool album, not pretentious, it has opened my eyes. Oh yeah and that other band, The National, they’re a cool band, they have a differnt vibe and it’s cool for bands like that to have the success they have cause if you only hear them you would never tell they’re into the mainstream channel. I like music that pushes the envelope, good music, there’s so much shit over there ahahaha. It’ easy for everyone now to make a record and put it out, so we’re polluted with crap ahahahaha.
M: Ok. Would you like to say something else to your italian fans?
A: Oh yeah, thanks. We appreciate everything you do, listening to our music, coming out to our shows. We’ve already done a healdine show here in front of 200 people, there’s gonna be one thousand tonight.
M: You also play a festival in Brescia this summer.
A: Yeah yeah, we played there too, but I was talking about a headline show we did two years ago.
M: The one with Frank Turner?
A: Yeah!
M: I love that guy.
A: He’s a great guy, an insane lyricist. He’s real, he’s a true artist, a true lyricist, his lyrics are incredible. Instead of talking to you he could just write lyrics, it’s pretty insane ahahhaha. We had some crazy nights together. One night we were drinking a beer and he asked for a guitar and start singing the most random cover songs and I was like: “is there something you don’t know?” and he replied: “try me!”. And I was like: “Uhm, ok, Jagged Little Pill, Alanis Morrissette, Ironic”. And he was like: “Where do you want me to start? I can play the whole record.” And I was like. “Fuck you ahahahahahhah”. Unbelieveble.
