La redazione di Sound Magazine incontra i canadesi Danko Jones, freschi di pubblicazione del loro ultimo album “Below the belt”. Risponde alle nostre domande il cantante Danko Jones. Di seguito è possibile leggere l’intervista in lingua originale.

Eleonora: Molte persone dicono che il vostro sound, dopo sei album, sia sempre lo stesso, e che non ci siano grossi cambiamenti rispetto all’inizio della vostra carriera. Come rispondereste a tali critiche?
Danko: Da noi puoi sempre aspettarti un album di rock duro. Noi siamo molto legati alle nostre radici proprio come i Ramones, gli Slayer, gli AC/DC e i Motorhead hanno fatto prima di noi. Non siamo così arroganti da aspettarci che il nostro pubblico apprezzi la nostra opera qualsiasi cosa facciamo, che sia fatta di pezzi rap o di elettronica. Sappiamo chi siamo e siamo felici per questo. Penso che la maggior parte delle persone che ci seguono siano d’accordo con questo.

E.. Il vostro ultimo album vi è costato due anni di lavoro. Come vi è venuta l’ispirazione per questo album, e quanto della vostra personale esperienza in questo periodo di tempo ha influenzato la sua stesura?
D.: Ho acuto la stessa ispirazione che mi è venuta per tutti gli altri album, semplicemente vivendo la vita. Semplicemente metti nelle canzoni quello attraverso cui passi.

E.: Per Below the belt avete lavorato insieme a Matt DeMatteo. Non conosciamo di preciso i rapporti che si sono tra di voi, ma anche se sono al top di sicuro non vi troverete sempre d’accordo su tutto. Quindi come fate a trovare un punto di accordo tra il vostro punto di vista, quello del vostro produttore, il mercato e i fan?
D.: Abbiamo un bellissimo rapporto con Matt. Ha lavorato con noi su quattro dei nostri album e ne ha prodotti tre. Pertanto abbiamo deciso di continuare a fidarci di lui e del suo lavoro. Quando non ci troviamo d’accordo non è un grosso problema. C’è sempre un grande rispetto tra di noi, e in questo modo riusciamo sempre a raggiungere un punto di equilibrio.

E.: Nuovo album, nuovo tour. Sono state aggiunte nuove date anche in questi ultimi giorni (Svezia, Danimarca, Germania, Italia, Spagna, Svizzera, Olanda e Belgio) e suonerete con molte band. Cosa vi aspettate di ricevere da ogni singola data? Voglio dire: ogni concerto, ogni giornata, ogni meet and greet è una nuova esperienza, sia in positive che in negative, ma come vi arricchirà ogni singola data e quanto questo influenzerà poi il vostro lavoro?
D.: Ci piace molto essere in tour e stare in giro, o anche solo incontrare, le altre band, perché è sempre una cosa molto divertente. Non so esattamente quanta parte di tutto ciascuno spettacolo e di ciascun incontro influenzi direttamente il nostro sound ma si va sicuramente ad aggiungere al bagaglio di esperienze che costituiscono la vita.

E.: Siete degli artisti, e la vostra arte è la musica. Attraverso l’arte si cerca di trasmettere un messaggio. Che cosa vorreste trasmettere ai vostri fan con la vostra musica? Qual è, secondo voi, il messaggio che dovrebbe rimanere in testa a ciascun fan che ascolta una vostra canzone o vede un vostro video, e racchiudere dentro di sé ogni giorno?
D.: Che questa band è troppo forte.

E.: “Full of regret” è il vostro primo video tratto dal nuovo album. Perché avete scelto questa canzone in particolare e non, ad esempio, “Had enough” o “Tonight is fine”? di chi è stata la decisione? Di tutta la band oppure è stata una “imposizione” del management?
D.: Noi non siamo una di quelle band che si fanno “imporre” qualcosa dal loro management. Abbiamo scelto noi “Full of regret” perché era una buona canzone. Non credi anche tu? È una delle mie canzoni preferite di tutto l’album.
 
E.: Ci potete anche dare qualche indizio sul prossimo video? Avete già scelto quale sarà il nuovo singolo?
D.: Inizieremo il nuovo video nelle prossime due settimane e lo gireremo a New York questa volta. I Diamond Brothers saranno di nuovo i registi del video. Ci saranno anche alcuni camei da parte di personaggi famosi ma non posso rivelare di più al momento.

E.: Ho visto il video di “Full of regret” ed è semplicemente fantastico. Mi è piaciuta molto la storia che ha narrato, il fatto che ci fosse molta azione e sicuramente è impressionante vedere due nomi come Selma Blair e Elijah Wood. Ma la storia che viene raccontata dal video è molto diversa da quella raccontata nelle parole della canzone. Voglio dire, nella canzone di parla di rimpianti, ma riferiti a una ex fidanzata, mentre nel video venite presi di mira da due cacciatori. Che significa?
D.: Significa qualsiasi cosa tu voglia far significare. Sai, non dovresti mai cercare di leggere troppo tra le righe quando si tratta di Rock ‘n’ Roll. Proprio come hanno detto gli Stones “È solo Rock ‘n’ Roll eppure mi piace”. Che cosa significa?

E.: Sempre parlando del video, pensate che il video del prossimo singolo sarà un seguito di questo, creando una specie di storia a puntate, oppure sarà qualcosa di completamente indipendente?
D.: Il prossimo sarà il prequel del video dio “Full of regret”.

E.: Cambiamo completamente argomento Stiamo attraversando un periodo di crisi economica che affligge ogni singolo aspetto della vita, compresa l’industria musicale, che attraversa un duro periodo anche in conseguenza della diffusione di sistemi per scaricare illegalmente la musica, spesso unica risposta a prezzi troppo alti imposti dalle etichette. Molti preferiscono scaricare illegalmente piuttosto che  comprare la propria copia di un cd. Quale pensate potrebbe essere una buona soluzione per invertire questa tendenza tra i vostri fan?
D.: La cosa migliore è creare dei packaging sempre più accattivanti, includendo piu bonus tracks e altri contenuti speciali per tutti quelli a cui piace la tua band e soprattutto suonare alla grande dal vivo.

E.: E’ risaputo che I Danko Jones viaggiano molto, e di solito hanno tour molto lunghi. Che cosa fate per passare il vostro tempo libero durante il viaggio da una città all’altra? Com’è vivere sempre con le stesse ersone per tre, quattro, cinque mesi in un anno in uno spazio tanto stretto quanto quello di uno tour bus senza cercare di uccidervi a vicenda?
D.: E’ passato molto tempo da quando abbiamo iniziato quindi abbiamo capito, con accomodamenti progressivi, come vivere così a stretto contatto uno con l’altro. il trucco sta nel dare all’altro il proprio spazio. Abbiamo tutti i nostri pc portatili quindi possiamo passare il tempo in questo modo, guardando film, leggendo, e così via.

E.: Qual è la band o il cantante con cui vi piacerebbe di più suonare? Vivo o morto.
D.: Ci piacerebbe molto suonare coi Metallica o con i Kiss. Sarebbe poi stato molto bello poter suonare con Jimi Hendrix o Phil Lynott.

E.: Questa è proprio per te, Danko. Sei un musicista, ma scrivi anche per riviste musicali e conduci un programma radiofonico. Ti è mai successo durante il programma di trasmettere una delle tue canzoni? E se si, come ti sei sentito?
D.: Non faccio piu il programma alla radio per mancanza di tempo. Non ho mai passato una delle mie canzoni di regola. Penso che sia da malati far passare le proprie canzoni durante il proprio programma musicale.

E.: E ora un ultima cosa prima di salutarci. Qual è la domanda a cui vi sarebbe sempre piaciuto rispondere e che nessuno vi ha ancora fatto?
D.: Come vi siete sentiti quando avete venduto il vostro primo milione di album?

Eleonora: Many people say that your sound, after 6 albums, is always the same, and there are no great changes from the beginning of your career. How would do you answer to them?
DANKO: You will always get a Hard Rock record from us. We stick to our story just like The Ramones, Slayer, AC/DC and Motorhead do too. We’re not gonna be so arrogant as to expect our audience to like our records no matter what we do, whether it’s rap or electronica. We know who we are and we are fine with that. I think most people who like us are fine with that too.

E: In your official website you start biography page with this statement “Danko Jones, 1996: “I got a white Cadillac, I keep the back seat for lovin’” Danko Jones, 2010: “I can screw your girl in the back of my Cadillac”. Why this change? Life has disappointed you in some way?
D: I don’t understand your question. Listen to all the lyrics of “Cadillac” and you can answer your own question.

E: The work on your last album took you two years time. How did you get the inspiration for this album, and how much of what did you experience in this period of time influence your inspiration?
D: I got the same inspiration as all the other albums, just living life. You just put what you go through in the songs.

E: For “Below the belt” you worked with Matt DeMatteo. I don’t know exactly your relationship with him, but I’m pretty sure that you not always agree on the same matter. So, what do you do to reach an equilibrium between your point of view, your producer point of view, market and fans?
D: We have a great relationship with Matt. He’s worked on 4 of our records and produced 3 so obviously we get along. When we disagree it’s no big deal. We respect each other so there’s your happy medium.

E: New album, new tour. You added new dates also in these last days (Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, The Netherlands and Belgium), and you’ll play with many band. What do you expect to have back from every single date? I mean: each concert, each day, each meet and greet is a new experience, even positive or negative, but how can every single date tour would enrich you, and how many would it influence your work?
D: We like touring and getting to hang out, or at least meet, with other bands is always fun. I don’t know how much of a direct influence each show is to our sound but it all adds up as a collective experience.

E: You are artists. And your art is music. I’m a writer, so in some way I’m an artist too. Not in the same field I know, but  in any case when I write a short story I’ll not try to put together words in a good way. I also try to transmit a message, an emotion, an image. What do you like to transmit to your fans with your music? What’s the most important thing, in your opinion, that you like to transmit to your fans with your music or videos? What do you like every single fan capture from your message and keep deeply with himself in every single day?
D: This band rocks.

E: “Full of regret” is your first music video from new album. Why did you choose this song and not, for example, “Had enough” or “Tonight is fine” (my favourite song)? Who had choose about this particular song? Is it a band decision or something “imposed” from management?
D: We are not one of those bands that get “imposed” by management. We chose “Full Of Regret” because it was a good song. Don’t you think it is? It’s one of my favorite songs off the album.

E: Could you still give to us some clue on the next video? Did you choose what song will be the next singe yet?
D: We’ll be doing the next video in 2 weeks and we’ll be shooting in New York City this time. The Diamond Brothers will be directing the video again. There will be cameos from people but that’s all I’m gonna give away right now.

E: I saw “Full of regret” video and it’s awesome: I loved video story, action you put in it and I’ve been impressed from two important names as Selma Blair and Elijah Wood. But video story is so different from song story. I mean, in your song you talk about regrets, but referring to a an ex girlfriend, and in video you are hunted from two people. What does it mean?
D: It means whatever you want it to mean. You know, you shouldn’t try and read too much into Rock ‘n’ Roll. Just like the Stones said “It’s only Rock ‘n’ Roll but I like it”. Adopt that way of thinking and you won’t wonder what it all means as much anymore.

E: Always talking about video, do you think that the next single video will be a continue of this one, creating a sort of story, or it’ll be something totally independent?
D: The next video will be a prequel to the first video.

E: We are going through an economic crisis period, that is affecting every single aspect of life, also music industry, that is travelling through an hard period because of illegal download and too high prices. Many people prefer to download illegally that to buy their own copy. What do you think could be a good way to invert this tendency between your fans?  
D: Make the packaging more enticing, include more bonus stuff for people who like your band and play great live shows.

E: It’s well known that Danko Jones travel a lot around the world. What do you make to pass your free time during travelling from one city to another, from one date to another? How is to live with same people for three, four, five month a year on such a small space as tour bus without trying to kill each other? 
D: It’s been a long time now so we’ve figured out how to live in close quarters of each other. The trick is to give each other space. We all have laptops so we can pass the time that way, watching movies, reading etc.

E: Which is the band or the singer that you most like to play with? Dead or alive.
D: Would like to play with Metallica and/or Kiss. It would’ve been cool to play with Jimi Hendrix or Phil Lynott.

E: This is for you, Danko. You are a musician, but you also write for music magazine and host a radio show. Did it ever happen that during your radio program you transmit one of your songs? And in case of affirmative answer, how did you feel?
D: I don’t do the radio show anymore. I never played any of our songs as a rule. I thought it was silly to play your own songs on your own radio show.

E: And then, because of you are a writer too, what’s the question that you’d like to answer but that no one has still ask to you?
D: How did it feel when you sold your first million albums?
