Dopo aver passato qualche mese nei Rehearsal Studio di Sheffield alle prese con la scrittura dei nuovi brani, i Bring Me The Horizon sono volati per la seconda volta in Svezia e più precisamente ai Fredman Studio per collaborare nuovamente con il leggendario produttore Frederik Nordstrom.
A fare il punto della situazione è l’ultimo arrivato, il chitarrista australiano Jona Weinhofen: “Questo sarà il terzo album dei Bring Me The Horizon e devo dire che abbiamo fatto un ottimo lavoro per quel che riguarda la fase di scrittura. Per la prima volta mi sono trovato a lavorare con loro su qualcosa di nuovo e devo ammettere di essermi trovato molto bene, in quanto il nuovo materiale è stilisticamente più completo e assai differente dei suoi predecessori. Ci siamo concentrati soprattutto sulla struttura dei brani in modo da renderli più catchy e ascoltabili. Cosa aspettarsi? Nuove idee, sperimentazione e una produzione ancor più eccellente di quella ottenuta in “Suicide season”! Ciò non deve però mettere in agitazione i fan, in quanto troveranno nuovamente tutti quegli elementi che ci hanno resi amati: riffing veloce, il solito concentrato di musica heavy e breakdown per farvi smuovere le teste”.

La pubblicazione del disco è prevista intorno ad agosto licenziato da Visible Noise Records.

Il gruppo di Sheffield è attualmente rintanato negli studi scozzesi Highlands a scrivere le canzoni che andranno a comporre il successore del fortunato “Suicide season”, uscito nel 2008. Tra marzo e aprile i musicisti partiranno per la Svezia, dove verrà registrato il disco assieme al produttore Frederik Nordstrom. La pubblicazione del disco è prevista per l’estate.

I Bring Me The Horizon sono stati eletti da diversi media una delle migliori band del 2009 del circuito alternative e sono in lizza in diverse sezioni per il classico Metal Hammer Golden Gods, celebrazione della sezione britannica del noto magazine Metal Hammer.

Sul fronte live è stata confermata la partecipazione alla data inglese del Sonisphere Festival il primo agosto e il Vans Warped Tour che li vedrà protagonisti dal 24 giugno al 15 agosto 2010.

Il 2009 è stato l’anno della consacrazione dei Bring Me The Horizon, coronato dall’uscita della ristampa remix di “Suicide season” (dove hanno collaborato – tra i tanti – membri di Utah Saints e Slipknot), dal primo tour giapponese, dai sold-out registrati in tutta Europa e dalle copertine di riviste musicali di tutto il mondo come Kerrang!, Rock Sound, Alternative Press e Blunt.
Ma ora per il gruppo di Sheffield è giunto il momento di pensare al futuro e in particolare al loro terzo album in studio. La prima notizia è che sarà ancora una volta il producer metal per antonomasia  Fredrik Nordström e i Fredman Studio a occuparsi della produzione (come in “Suicide season”), una scelta dovuta stando a sentire le dichiarazioni del cantante Oliver Sykes: “Il 2009 è stato un anno infernale per tutti noi, passato costantemente in tour! Il nostro secondo disco “Suicide season” ha avuto un successo clamoroso e molto di esso è dovuto al fatto che abbiamo fatto un lavoro promozionale incredibile, oltre ovviamente alla potenza delle sue canzoni. Tornare a lavorare con Fredrik ci rende felici e orgogliosi, in quanto si è andata a creare una sinergia che sono sicuro otterrà risultati ancora più clamorosi con il nuovo disco“.

I Bring Me The Horizon, nel bene e nel male, sanno sempre come stupire. Nel giro di pochi anni sono passati da illustri sconosciuti a uno dei gruppi metal più amati (prevalentemente dai e soprattutto dalle giovani) dei giorni nostri. Amati dai più ma anche pieni di detrattori, pronti ad aspettare qualsiasi passo falso per screditarli appena possibile.
Questo “Suicide Season – Cut up” rischia però di allineare per una volta sullo stesso livello fans e detrattori. Perchè mai? Perchè non si tratta altro che di una versione remixata del fortunato secondo album del gruppo uscito l’anno scorso. Il problema sta tutto nei generi che caratterizzano i remix, ovvero elettronica, dubstep e drum’n'bass. Non proprio il genere di chi segue il gruppo. Quindi se non siete avezzi a certe sonorità è meglio saltare a pie’ pari questo album. Per chi invece non si pone limiti o semplicemente sa godersi i generi, direi che “Suicide Season – Cut up” merita più di qualche ascolto. Certo, non tutti i remix sono degni di nota, ma nel complesso è un lavoro godibile che strappa perfino qualche sorriso se ci si ferma a pensare alle due versioni.

Potremmo stare qui ore a discutere sulla bontà e sull’utilità di un’uscita come questa, ma questo non ci porterà da nessuna parte. I Bring Me The Horizon sono giovani, hanno voglia di divertirsi e lo fanno facendo ciò che li piace. E questa uscita in qualche modo rispecchia questa attitudine: per quanto bizzarra possa sembrare, deve essere presa per quel che è, ovvero una goliardata in musica, che non ha secondi fini se non quello di divertire e intrattenere l’ascoltatore. Niente di più, niente di meno. Ma un ascolto potete concederglielo: chissà, magari potrebbe anche piacervi.

Gli Stigma saranno la band d’apertura dei due show italiani (07/11 Milano, Magazzini Generali, 08/11 Roma, Alpheus) del tour da headliner dei Bring Me The Horizon! La redazione di Sound Magazine partecipa al suo primo round table (una sorta di conferenza stampa, n.d.a.) assieme a rappresentanti di Radio Sherwood, Metal Italia, Outune e Noize Italia.
La location è il backstage del Rock In Idro al Palasharp di Milano e il gruppo intervistato è la giovane metal band inglese Bring Me The Horizon.
Rispondono alle domande il cantante Oli, il batterista Matt, il chitarrista Lee e il bassista Matt.

Jonah dei Bleeding Through è una scelta temporanea?
(Curtis, uno dei due chitarristi originali, ha abbandonato il gruppo nel mezzo del tour americano per motivi personali, n.d.a.)
Matt: Non sappiamo ancora, non abbiamo idea di cosa faremo, nel senso sta facendo bene e siamo entusiasti che suoni la chitarra con noi ma non abbiamo idea, non sappiamo cosa faremo.
Oli: E’ salito a bordo per provare, noi lo stiamo provando, lui sta provando per se stesso, non abbiamo ancora deciso di sederci e parlarne, ma ci va benissimo così.

Vi piace suonare su grossi palchi come Rock In Idro?
Matt: E’ tutto veramente figo!
Oli: Si, penso che mi piacciano di più i palchi piccoli, per essere più vicino ai fans, per essere…uhm…qual’è la parola?
Matt: Intimi!
Oli: Intimi! Si è bello suonare su palchi grandi e avere nuovi fans o gente che sappia chi sei e cose così…
Matt: E’ un’esperienza totalmente diversa suonare su palchi grandi come questo e in piccoli locali, è completamente diverso ma mi piacciono entrambe.

La giovane età dei vostri fans è un dato di fatto. Sentite di avere qualche responsabilita?
Matt: Ehm…NO! (ride)

Come è stato lavorare in uno studio importante come il Fredman Studio? Quali sono le differenze con i precedenti studi?
Matt: Penso sia stato buono, gli unici studi in cui abbiamo registrato non erano così buoni. E’ stato figo, è stata definitivamente una bella esperienza volare in Svezia e registrare con Fredrik, ha registrato tanti buoni gruppi che ci piacciono, è stata davvero una grande esperienza paragonandola agli altri studi. Che hai detto?
Oli: Tutti gli studi sono un’opzione.
Matt: Si, abbiamo registrato a Nottingham e Birmingham che non sono proprio famosi come studi, nel senso, erano buoni.
Lee: Gli studi sono vari come i produttori, se hai un buon produttore il lavoro è fatto.

In “Suicide Season” avete introdotto alcune parti elettroniche. Come siete giunti a questo?
Oli: Penso che quando stavamo componendo Suicide Season eravamo tutti d’accordo nel voler fare qualcosa di totalmente diverso dall’album precedente e penso che abbiamo deciso di provare tutto, quindi…Penso che l’elettronica era solo un qualcosa da provare e che ha funzionato, a tutti noi piacciono diversi tipi di musica, siamo tutti presi dalla musica elettronica, hip hop e dance, quindi volevamo portare questo nella nostra musica senza sembrare pazzi, in modo che funzionasse, che suonasse benee non come…non lo so…come gli Enter Shikari e simili.

I fans hanno apprezzato queste sperimentazioni?
Matt:Si.
Oli: Penso di si.
Matt: E’ un qualcosa che pensiamo possa essere figo, no?
Oli: Cosa?
Matt: Remixarli solo un pochino.
Oli: Penso che se lo facciamo ci odieranno ancora di più.

Bene ragazzi, oggi condividerete il palco con Faith No More e Limp Bizkit. Cosa ne pensate? Vi hanno ispirato?
Matt: Si, senza dubbio. Dico Limp Bizkit, senza dubbio.
Oli: I Limp Bizkit sono il gruppo che mi hanno portato nel rock’n'roll. Senza di loro non saremo un gruppo, quindi…

Qual’è il significato dietro la title track di Suicide Season? E’ dedicata ad un amico morto o qualcosa di simile?
Oli: Parla di un nostro amico che ha perso il padre e da quel giorno l’abbiamo perso perchè lo ha colpito molto e lo ha portato a prendere decisioni sbagliate nei confronti del gruppo, e penso che come il cd precedente, questo cd è tutto riguardante la vita, la morte e le scelte che vengono fatte, e penso che ci sia la realizzazione che ci sia qualcosa peggiore della morte.

Oli quando eri più giovane hai suonato in un gruppo rap. E’ vero?
Oli: No (ride).
Matt: Ne abbiamo fatto uno per scherzo.
Oli: Era uno scherzo.
Matt: Era uno scherzo. Un giorno eravamo annoiati e per qualche ragione abbiamo deciso di far qualcosa di stupido.

Vi piace il rap, hip-hop?
Matt: Si si. Ma era uno scherzo.

E cosa dite delle voci della rissa tra Oli e Sam degli Architects?
Matt: Lo odiamo! Lo odiamo!

So che è una cavolata ma era vero?
Matt: Non è una cavolata.E’ tutto vero!

Perchè c’è un video dove continuate a lottare e gridare.
Bring Me The Horizon: (ridono)
Matt: Odiamo Sam Carter.

Avete ricevuto mail da fans degli Architects impazziti?
Matt: No, no da un bel po’.
Oli: E’ solo una cosa che abbiamo fatto quando eravamo annoiati.

Quindi è stata presa seriamente?
Matt: Si, tutta l’ha gente l’ha presa seriamente, ci ha pensato seriamente, è pazzesco ma è una cosa che abbiamo fatto coi nostri amici per passare il tempo.

Era strano perchè Sam Carter appare sul vostro cd.
Oli:Si, sono tipo i nostri migliori amici.
Matt: Li abbiamo visti l’altro giorno, siamo veramente buoni amici con gli Architects. La gente l’ha presa un po’ troppo sul serio. E’ tutto apposto.

Vi ho visti due anni fa con i Killswitch Engage. Quali sono i pro e contro di andare in tour con una band grande come i Killswitch Engage?
Oli: Penso che i pro siano girare e suonare per nuovi fans e per la gente che non ci ha mai sentito, i contro sono che la gente odia il nostro gruppo, quindi…

Veramente?
Oli: Si. Nel senso in Europa è andata abbastanza bene, ma in Inghilterra abbiamo quella di essere il gruppo che si ama o si odia, e a molti dei fans dei Killswitch Engage non piaceva il nostro gruppo quindi abbiamo preso parecchia mxxxa e non è stato bello.

Usate spesso l’ironia nei vostri testi. Come traete ispirazione dalla letteratura, dal cinema, dalla tv? Ogni tanto sembra da Kevin Smith ogni tanto abbia testi strani, per esempio For Stevie Wonder’s Eyes Only è abbastanza sarcastica come canzone.
Matt: (ride)
Oli: Penso che mentre i testi siano sempre seri riguardo a cose che ho vissuto, talvolta i titoli delle canzoni…
Matt: Penso che molte delle volte i titoli delle canzoni risultano stupidi perchè non riusciamo a pensare a un nome buono.
Oli: Le canzoni possono essere chiamate come parti dei testi di una canzone o in base a quello di cui parla la canzone, ma possono diventare qualcosa di talmente diverso e stupido.
Matt: Siamo persone stupide.

Riguardo alla vostra formazione. Il vostro chitarrista vi ha lasciato il mese scorso. State cercando un sostituto o continuerete con Jonah (Bleeding Through/ ex I Killed The Prom Queen)?
Oli: Non so che dire, cioè sembra bravo. A tutti noi piace Jonah, penso che Jonah si stia divertendo, chissà se potrà diventare un membro, non lo sappiamo.

Qual’è la storia che ha ispirato Sleep With One Eye Open?
Matt: E’ sempre lo stesso ragazzo.
Oli: Si, è sempre lo stesso ragazzo.

Tutto il cd riguarda quel ragazzo?
Oli: No, di base questo ragazzo era il mio migliore amico, gli è morto il padre e lo stavamo aiutando.
Matt: Gli abbiamo dato un lavoro.
Oli: Lavorava col nostro merch.

Lo stavate aiutando?
Oli: Non è perchè suo padre è morto, era veramente un nostro buon amico, il mio migliore amico, eravamo completamente migliori amici, e vendeva il nostro merch online, e un giorno abbiamo scoperto che prendeva il nostro merch e lo vendeva su ebay senza che noi lo sapessimo, e ci faceva soldi su questo senza che noi lo sapessimo, di base ci ha completamente pugnalato alle spalle, quindi Sleep With One Eye Open è come…Sì conosco il testo.
Oli: Solo una canzone di come mi sono sentito a riguardo. Non l’ho più visto da quel giorno.

Come ci si sente ad essere giovani e ad essere già andati in tour in gran parte del mondo?
Oli: Si, è figo eheh.

Pensavate di raggiungere questo obiettivo quando avete iniziato?
Oli: Era un obiettivo, penso che era uno dei nostri sogni. Nel senso penso sia la cosa migliore, penso che sembri un clichè se dico che non ci importa dei soldì ma la cosa più importante è di andare in tutti questi posti nuovi. Siamo già stati in Giappone…in Australia…
Lee: Posti in cui non saremmo mai riusciti ad andare se non facessimo questo, perchè è dura permetterseli.
Oli: Nessun altro può permettersi di andare in questi posti, noi possiamo permettercelo…è fantastico!

Ti sto guardando (parlando a Matt, bassista). Dove sono i tuoi tatuaggi?
Matt (bassista): (ride) ho un grosso tribale qui (coscia destra, n.d.a.) ma non lo mostro mai.
Matt: Segreto…(ride).

Avete collaborato con JJ Peters dei Deez Nuts su Football Season Is Over e avete anche suonato assieme al suo gruppo. Come vi siete incontrati per la prima volta?
Matt: Suonava la batteria nei I Killed The Prom Queen…
Oli: Quando è uscito il suo nuovo gruppo – Deez Nuts – eravamo già amici con JJ e quando è venuto il momento del nostro lavoro abbiamo pensato che è il più grande ragazzo “party-bevi-ogni-giorno”, quindi è stata una cosa naturale.

Qual’è la connessione tra il video di The Comedown e la canzone?
Bring Me The Horizon: Non c’è (ridono).
Matt: L’abbiamo pensato noi, è qualcosa che è venuto fuori a una delle prove del gruppo – eravamo abbastanza fumati – e abbiamo avuto questa stupida idea del tipo “Yeah facciamolo” e non pensavamo che lo fosse ma alla fine l’abbiamo fatto, e non è venuto come volevamo che venisse.
Oli: Fa schifo!
Matt: Ci fa schifo ma siamo solo stupidi.

Guardando i vostri testi, le foto su myspace, il booklet del cd, voi siete assolutamente fan dei film horror e splatter. Avete visto qualcosa di interessante recentemente?
Matt: Film! Oh cosa stavamo vedendo l’altro giorno? Oh era una commedia, uhm non mi ricordo.

Matt: E’ da secoli che non vedo un buon film horror.

C’è questo film horror in 3d (San Valentino Di Sangue)…
Matt: Non l’ho visto.

Non andarlo a vedere!
Matt: (ride).

Avete parlato di JJ, ora parliamo di Luis di The Secret Handshake. Come vi siete conosciuti?
Oli: Penso di conoscerlo meglio di tutti perchè…

Per via della Drop Dead?
Oli: Si si. Sono un fan di The Secret Handshake dagli inizi, un giorno ho comprato merch dalla sua pagina e mi ha detto “ho visto il tuo sito” e io “se ti piace posso sponsorizzarti” e da quel momento siamo sempre rimasti in contatto, poi è venuto a fare delle parti elettroniche perchè sa tutto di quelle cose e ne eravamo entusiasti, ha fatto quelle di Chelsea Smile, è stato davvero bravo.

Is Jonah from Bleeding Through a temporary choice?

Matt: We don’t know yet, we have no idea of what we’re gonna do I mean he’s doing well I mean we’re stoked that he’s playing guitar but we have no idea, we don’t know what we’re gonna do.
Oli: He has kinda come on boards to try out, we’re trying out first I guess he’s trying out for him so I guess we haven’t set up and talk about it yet but I mean we’re fucking good with it.

Do you like to play on big stages like Rock In Idro?
Matt: It’s all pretty cool!
Oli: Yeah I think I like more small stages, like being close to the fans, being kinda like uhm…what’s the word?
Matt: Intimate!
Oli: Intimate! I mean it’s cool to play big shows to have new fans and people to know who we are and stuff.
Matt: It’s a totally different experience like playing on huge stages like this and to play in small venues, like it’s completely different but I think I enjoy it both

The young age of your fans is a fact. Do you feel any sort of responsability?
Matt: Ehm…NO! Ahahahahahahahahah.

How was it to work with an important studio like Fredman Studio. What are the main differences with the previous ones?
Matt: Ehm I guess it was good, the only studios we’ve recorded at have been not that good. It was cool, it was definitely a good experience to go over to Sweden and record with Fredrik, he’s recorded so many good bands that we like, so it was definitely cool, a good experience compared to other studios. What did you say?
Oli: All the studios are options.
Matt: Yeah, we’ve recorded in like Nottingham and Birmingham that are not exactely like popular range studios or whatever, I mean they were good.
Lee: Studios are various like the producers, if you have a good producer the work is done.

In “Suicide Season” you’ve introduced some electronic samples in your songs. How did you come up with this?
Oli: I guess like when we were writing Suicide Season we all agreed to write something completely diffrent than our album before and I guess we’ve decided to try everything so … I think the electronic thing was just a try out and it seemed to work I guess we all like different types of music and stuff like we’re all into like electronic music, hip hop and dance, so we just wanted to bring it in our music without being too crazy, with it working, still sounding right and not too like uhm I don’t know…like Enter Shikari or something like that.

Did fans appreciate these experiments?
Matt: Yeah.
Oli: I guess so.
Matt: Is this something we thought would be cool, isn’t it?
Oli: What?
Matt: We want to do just kinda mix up a little bit.
Oli: I think that if we do it they will hate us even more.

What’s the meaning behind the Suicide Season’s title track? Is it dedicated to a dead friend or something like that?
Oli: It’s about one of our friend who has lost his dad and from that day we’ve kinda lost him because it affected him a lot and made him make some bad decisions that he took against our band and I guess like the previous cd, this cd is all about life and death and the choices you’re making out and I guess there’s a realization that there’s something worse than death.

Oli, when you were younger you played in a rap band. Is it true?
Oli: No ahaha.
Matt: We made one as a joke.
Oli: It was a joke.
Matt: It was a joke. We were bored one day and then for some reason we decided to make something stupid.

Do you like rap, hip-hop?
Matt: Yeah yeah. But it was just a joke.

What about the rumours of a fight between Oli and Sam from Architects?
Matt: We hate him! We hate him!

I know that it’s bullshit but was it true?
Matt: It’s not bullshit, it’s all real ahaahaha.

Did you receive any email from crazy Architects fans?
Matt: No, not for a while.
Oli: It’s just a thing we did when we were bored.

Matt: Yeah all people take it seriously, think about it seriously, it’s pretty crazy yeah but it was just another thing we did with our buddies to kill time.

It was strange because Sam Carter does a feauturing on your cd.
Oli: Yeah yeah they’re like our best friends.
Matt: We saw them the other day, we’re really good friends with Architects. People took it a little bit too seriously. It’s all cool and fun.

I’ve seen you guys two years ago with Killswitch Engage. What are the pros and cons of touring with a big band like Killswitch Engage?
Oli: I guess like the pros are like getting out playing to all new fans and playing to people that never heard of us and the cons is that people fuckin hate our band so

Really?
Oli: Yeah. I mean in Europe it was quite good, in England we’ve like the wreck of the being one of those bands you love or hate, and a lot of Killswitch fans don’t like our band so we got a lot of shit on that and wasn’t good.

You always use irony in your lyrics. How do you drive your inspiration from literature, cinema, tv? Sometimes it seems from Kevin Smith, you know strange lyrics, for example “For Stevie Wonder’s Eyes Only” is a quite sarcastic song.
Matt: Ahahahhahaha
Oli: I guess I mean like whereas the lyrics are always serious about stuff I’m actually experiencing, sometimes the song titles…
Matt: Most of the time I think some titles come stupid because we can’t think of a good name
Oli: The songs could be just called like one of the lyrics in the song or what the song is about but it can turn out something completely different and stupid yeah.
Matt: We’re pretty stupid people.

And about your line up. Your guitarist left like a month ago. Are you searching for someone new or are continuing with Jonah (Bleeding Through/ ex I Killed The Prom Queen) ?
Oli: I don’t what to say, I mean he’s looking good. We all like Jonah, we think Jonah’s enjoying himself, who knows if he could be a member, we just don’t know.

What’s the story that inspired “Sleep With One Eye Open”?
Matt: It’s about the same guy
Oli: Yeah it’s about the same guy…

Is the whole cd about that guy?
Oli: No, it was basically this kid was my best friend, his dad died and we were like helping him..
Matt: We gave him a job..
Oli: He used to work with our merch

You helped him out?
Oli: It’s not because his dad died, he was one of our really good friend, like my best friend, we were actually like complete best friends and he was selling our merch online and the one day we’ve find out that he was like taking the merch and selling it on ebay without us knowing and like making money off that without us knowing, so he kinda completely stabbed us in the back, so Sleep With One Eye Open is kinda like…

Oli: Just a song of how I’ve felt about it. I haven’t seen him since after that.

How does it feel to be young and have already toured across most of the world?
Oli: Yeah, it’s cool eheh.

Did you ever think you’d reach this goal when you started?
Oli: It was a goal I mean I guess it was one of our dreams. I mean I suppose it’s the best, I sound like clichè like we don’t care about money but our biggest perk is to get to see all these new places. We’ve already went to Japan…Australia…
Lee: Places we’d never get to go unless we’re doing this because they’re hard to afford
Oli: No one else can afford to go to all these places, we can afford to go to these places…it’s amazing!

I’m watching you (talking to Matt, bass). Where are your tattoos?
Matt (bass): Ahahhaah I have a big tribal right here (right thigh, n.d.a.) but I never get it out.

You’ve done a collaboration with JJ Peters from Deez Nuts in “Football Season Is Over” and you played with his band as well. How did you meet him in the first place?
Matt: He has played drums with I Killed The Prom Queen…
Oli: When his new band came out – Deez Nuts – we were already friend with JJ and when it came to our release and stuff we thought that he’s the biggest “party-drink-every-day” guy so it seemed natural.

Which is the connection between the video of “The Comedown” and the song?
Bring Me The Horizon: There is none ahahahaha.
Matt: I think we’ve come up with that, it’s something we talked about in band reharsal one day – we were pretty stoned – and we got this stupid idea like “Yeah let’s do that” and actually we didn’t think it was but we did and it didn’t come out how we wanted it to come out…
Oli: It’s shit!
Matt: It’s pretty shit to us but yeah we’re just stupid

Looking at your lyrics, the photos on your space, your booklet, you guys are absolutely fans of horror splatter movies. Have you seen anything interesting lately?
Matt: Movies! Oh what were we watching the other day? Oh it was a commedy film ehm I can’t remember…

Oli: I guess I knew him more than anyone cause…

I’ve been a fan of The Secret Handshake since the band has started, I bought some merch on his site once and he was like “I saw your website” and I was “if you like it you can get sponsored” and ever since then we kinda stayed in touch and stuff like that and then he came off to do some electronics since he knows all about and we were up for it, he did it for Chelsea Smile, pretty cool.
