Provenienti dalla periferia nord di Chicago, gli Young Jesus sono una band di cinque ragazzi (Shawn Nystrand, Cody Kellogg, John Rossiter, Joe Levand e Peter Martin) che basa la scrittura delle sue canzoni sulle esperienze di vita vissuta in maniera estrema, senza limiti o restrizioni. Musicalmente, ascoltando il loro EP di debutto “Late Night Standards” (scaricabile gratuitamente dal loro sito) non si riesce a tener ferma la testa. Un misto di folk/pop davvero riuscito.

Ciao ragazzi! Innanzitutto vorreste presentarvi ai nostri lettori?
Si certo. Siamo i Young Jesus da Chicago, Illinois. John Rossiter (voce, chitarra), Shawn Nystrand (voce, chitarra),  Cody Kellog (chitarra), Joe Levand (basso) e Peter Martin (batteria). Suoniamo un mix di indie, punk e folk rock. Suoniamo insieme da circa un anno.

Vorreste parlarci del vostro ep di debutto “Late Night Standards”?
Certamente. L’abbiamo registrato ai Semaphore Studios di Chicago con Eric Block. Abbiamo cercato di comporre musica nel modo più naturalmente possibile. Non abbiamo cercato di entrare forzatamente in alcun genere o classificazione. Abbiamo lavorato solo con l’alchimia che abbiamo come musicisti e amici. Volevamo fare un album che suonasse come un concerto in dvd con lo schermo della tv oscurato. Abbiamo provato a catturare l’energia e l’intensità dei nostri concerti.

La vostra musica è un incredibile mix di indie, folk e rock. Mi ricordate un mix di Neutral Milk Hotel e Brand New, due gruppi che adoro. Come vi descrivereste?
Abbiamo sempre avuto difficoltà nel classificarci. Pensiamo che sia veramente difficile se sei direttamente coinvolto nel gruppo e nelle canzoni. Le canzoni nascono seguendo la musica. Diventano la tua vita. Ed è abbastanza difficile classificare o descrivere la propria vita. Alla fine fondiamo insieme le influenze di gruppi che amiamo come Wilco, The National, The Doors, Van Morrison, Alkaline Trio, Modest Mouse e così via.

La vostra musica sembra essere apprezzata sia dagli adolescenti ma anche da un pubblico più maturo, e penso che sia un buon equilibrio per il gruppo. Come create la vostra musica? La pianificate dall’inizio o lasciate che l’ispirazione abbia un ruolo maggiore?
Non ci sediamo mai con l’intenzione di comporre un certo tipo di canzone. E’ un processo lungo, ma solitamente qualcuno porta lo scheletro di una canzone e poi ci sediamo per qualche settimane a suonare tra di noi. Le canzoni iniziano e finisco in posti completamente diversi. L’ispirazione ha un ruolo enorme. Penso che sia l’unico modo in cui riusciamo a comporre.

Siete descritti come un gruppo di festaioli casinisti a cui piace bere e divertirsi. Pensate che questo modo di godersi la vita influenzi in qualche modo la vostra musica? Nel senso, sicuramente a livello di testi, ma anche a livello compositivo?
“Late Night Standards” era una sorte di ode per il liceo e l’aver messo su il gruppo. E’ successo molto nelle nostre vite agli inizi del gruppo. Suonare rock ha decisamente un legame con il far festa selvaggia, ed è quello che abbiamo fatto. Durante quel periodo il polmone del nostro batterista Peter è collassato due volte. Inoltre Cody, il nostro chitarrista, ha avuto un paio di attacchi improvvisi nel mezzo delle registrazioni. Tali avvenimenti cambiano naturalmente la propria prospettiva nella vita. Quindi ci siamo resi conto che far festa non è esattamente la nostra vita. Stiamo iniziando a riflettere, e si spera a maturare. Le nuove canzoni richiamano a tutto quel far festa, ma anche al fare qualcosa di nuovo. Ovviamente usciamo ancora e beviamo qualche bicchiere, ma le nostre vite sono cambiate.

Mettere il vostro ep in download gratuito sul vostro myspace è una scelta coraggiosa, specialmente per un gruppo emergente. Come siete arrivati a questa decisione?
Abbiamo solo voluto che la nostra musica raggiungesse più persone possibili. Non c’è modo migliore che renderla disponibile gratuitamente.

Penso che “Late Night Standards” sia la chiave giusta per aprir la porta di una grande attività concertistica. Siete già in tour per promuovere l’ep?
Suoniamo a Chicago tutto il tempo. Infatti giusto ora stiamo aspettando di suonare al Bottom Lounge. Stiamo comunque cercando di uscire, e stiamo tentando di muoverci verso la West Coast questa estate.

C’è qualche gruppo che vorreste promuovere consigliandolo ai nostri lettori?
Futuresaurus. Sono un grandioso duo punk di Chicago. Anche gli Emblems. Facciamo concerti con loro tutto il tempo e ci stanno aiutando col nostro imminente ep acustico. Sono grandiosi pure loro.

Hi dudes, nice to meet you. First of all, would you like to introduce yourselves to our readers?
Yes, we would. We are Young Jesus, from Chicago, Illinois. There is John Rossiter (singer/guitar), Shawn Nystrand (singer/guitarist), Cody Kellogg (lead guitar), Joe Levand (bass), and Peter Martin (drums). We play a mixture of indie, punk, and folk rock. We’ve been playing together for about a year now.

Would you like to talk about your debut ep “Late Night Standards” ?
Sure. We recorded at Semaphore Studios in Chicago with Eric Block. We just tried to go about writing the music as naturally as possible. We weren’t trying to force ourselves into any sort of genre or classification. We just worked with our chemistry as musicians and friends. We wanted to make an album that sounds like a concert DVD if your TV screen blacked out. We went in trying to capture the energy and intensity of our live shows.

Your music is an incredible mix of indie, folk and rock. You remind me of a mixture of Neutral Milk Hotel and Brand New, two bands that I love. How would you describe yourselves?
We’ve always had a hard time classifying ourselves. We think that’s a very difficult thing when you’re so involved in a band and in the songs. The songs start to sort of go beyond music. They become your life. And it’s pretty hard to classify or describe your life. In the end, we just blend the influences of bands we love like Wilco, The National, The Doors, Van Morrison, Alkaline Trio, Modest Mouse and so on.

Your guys seems to be appreciated both by teenagers and a mature audience, and I think this is a good balance for the band. How do you create your music? Do you plan it from the start or do you let the inspiration have a major role in it?
We never sit down with the intention of writing a certain sort of song. It’s a long process, but usually someone brings a skeleton of a song, and we sit together over a span of weeks playing off each other. Songs start and end in completely different places. Inspiration plays a huge role. It might be the only way we write.

You’re described as five party smashers who like to drink and have fun. Do you think that this way of enjoying life affects your music in some way. I mean, surely lyrically, but also in regards to composition?
“Late Night Standards” was sort of an ode to high school and to starting the band. A lot happened in our lives at the beginning of the band. Playing rock music definitely has a hard partying stigma, and that’s what we did. In the midst of that though, our drummer’s (Peter) lung collapsed twice. Also, Cody, our guitarist, had a couple seizures, one in the midst of recording. Those sorts of events just naturally change your perspective on life. So, we’ve settled into realizing that partying is not exactly our lives. We are starting to reflect, and hopefully mature. The new songs are coming to terms with all that partying, but also finding new things to do. We’ll still obviously go out and have a few drinks, but our lives have changed.

Putting your ep in free download on your myspace is a brave choice to make, especially for a new band. How did you come up to this choice?
We just wanted to get our music out to as many people as possible. There’s no better way than to give it out for free.

I think that “Late Night Standards” is the right key to open the doors of a huge live activity. Have you already started touring to promote this ep?
We play shows in Chicago all the time. In fact we’re waiting right now to play at the Bottom Lounge. We’re looking to get out, though, and we’re tentatively heading to the West Coast this summer.

Is there a band that you would like to promote by suggesting it to our readers?
Futuresaurus. They are an awesome two piece punk band from Chicago. Also, Emblems. We play shows with them all the time, and they are helping us with our forthcoming acoustic EP. They are also awesome.
