In occasione della data italiana dell’Eastpak Antidote Tour ’09, la redazione di Soundmagazine incontra Chris Steele, bassista dei canadesi Alexisonfire che ci racconta un po’ delle esperienze passate, presenti e future della band dell’Ontario.

Come procede l’Eastpak Tour? 
Oh,è incredibile. Quest’anno abbiamo l’occasione di visitare posti dove non abbiamo ancora messo piede come la repubblica Ceca, la Spagna e la Finlandia, la tappa conclusiva. Ma nonostante cio’ abbiamo avuto degli alti e bassi durante il tragitto, non so se hai sentito.
 
Ti riferisci ai problemi con il tour bus? Si ho sentito che stamane(2 novembre 2009, nda) avete avuto dei problemi e so anche che non è stata la prima volta, mi sbaglio?  
Per questo tour abbiamo cambiato compagnia ed eravamo eccitati all’idea di viaggiare su questi nuovi bus, tanto che ho comprato il nuovo Tiger Woods 2010 per spassarmela durante il tragitto. Dopo due giorni che eravamo in Inghilterra, il bus si è rotto e abbiamo dovuto ricorrere a quelli vecchi, bassi, scomodi e senza ventilazione al piano superiore.
 
Chissà che buon odore di piedi! (risate) 
Ahahah. Sai non è facile dividere degli spazi con altre 14 persone. Qualche giorno fa ci hanno restituito il bus di partenza, ma nel frattempo ne abbiamo cambiati addirittura 8! E stamattina mentre scendevamo dalle montagne austriache, qualcos’altro non è andato e ci siamo accostati per 5 ore al ciglio della strada. Fortunatamente dormivamo tutti, in quanto era presto.
 
Tuttavia il bill di quest’anno è incredibile, non trovi?
Veramente incredibile. Con gli Anti-Flag abbiamo girato un bel po’ di volta in Nord America e già ci conoscevamo, mentre era la prima volta che incontravamo i Four Year Strong, bravissimi ragazzi e ottima band.
 
Mentre ormai ogni volta che venite in Europa o Inghilterra ultimamente avete sempre i The Ghost Of A Thousand al vostro fianco.
Sono dei ragazzi incredibili, nonchè una grandissima band.
 
Ho sentito in una vostra vecchia intervista che amate molto l’Europa in quanto il target dei “kids” è maggiore, ossia c’è piu’ possibilità di trovare una multitudine di elementi ad un vostro concerto.
Si è vero, e questo tour ne è l’esempio lampante. Ci siamo noi e i TGOAT che siamo i piu’ “pesanti”, poi ci sono gli Anti-Flag che sono punk-rock e poi i FYS, che hanno richiami pop-punk. In Nord America rischi sempre di vedere gente annoiata e annoiarti te stesso, per questo cerchiamo sempre di suonare in occasioni o festival dove c’è piu’ mescolanza fra generi e stili. E poi finalmente torniamo alla dimensione del club, dove suoni di sera e sai precisamente a che ora lo fai. Dopo 53 date di seguit all’aperto, svegliandoti la mattina e sapere che magari da li a mezz’ora dovrai suonare, non è confortante alla lunga, credimi.
 
Immagino. Parliamo del vostro ultimo album. Da fan di vecchia data come lo sono, ho trovato notevoli difficoltà nell’assimilarlo. Che cosa vi ha influenzato umanamente e artisticamente durante la stesura di questo?
Abbiamo sicuramente preso un tempo molto piu’ lungo rispetto ai precedenti lavori, impostando tanto tempo sulla preproduzione. Ai tempi di Watchout e Crisis eravamo in giro 10 mesi all’anno, provavamo le nostre nuove idee sul tourbus o durante i soundcheck, ci fermavamo il periododi Natale e fra Gennaio e Marzo registravamo il tutto. Non è stato il momento di dire, dobbiamo fare un nuovo album, bensi vogliamo farlo. Durante questi 17 mesi ci siamo separati, chi per seguire i propri side-project come Dallas(City and Colour) e Wade(Black Lungs) e chi per dedicarsi alla propria famiglia. Volevamo rappresentare al meglio quanto gli AOF siano cambiato e maturati dagli inizi e quanto ora non siamo piu’ dei ragazzini.
 
Ed è questa la via che volete seguire?
Per quest’album si.
 
Quando ho ascoltato Young Cardinals la prima volta, mi sono venuti in mente i St.Catherines. Forse per il drumming molto piu’ veloce del solito e la voce di George, molto piu’ sporca.
Davvero?!! Adesso che ci penso, è vero! Ci sono delle similitudini.
 
“We are not the kids we used to be” e ” Don’t wishing for yesterday” sono due frasi contenute in Old Crows che mi hanno colpito molto. State ripudiando il passato? O è un modo per dire “Ehi i vecchi AOF non ci sono piu’”?
In un modo si. Credo che devi essere sempre gratificante verso il passato e io lo sono. Ma quando ascolto i brani del 2001, quando eravamo 5 ragazzini da liceo che venivano da esperienze diverse e che volevano solo spaccare il mondo mi accorgo di quanto non ci sia una cosa che vada con l’altra,ognuno andava per i fatti propri quando suonava e non trovavamo nemmeno mai un ritornello che fosse uno! Poi guarda me, guarda cosa facevo! Siamo cresciuti, abbiamo imparato e siamo maturati ed era arrivato il momento di dimostrarlo.
 
Quindi, oggi, gli Alexisonfire sono piu’ Old Crows o Young Cardinals?
Oggi? mmm… bella domanda! Prenderei una via di mezzo fra le due risposte. Diciamo che siamo sempre noi, siamo sempre gli Alexisonfire. Forse il cambiamento di stile è parso drastico, ma comunque non siamo cambiati negli atteggiamenti e nell’attitudine. Di certo non siamo piu’ “the kids we used to be” ma i vecchi Alexisonfire in nuovi vesti.
 
Recentemente al Warped Tour hanno fatto la loro comparsa personaggi che mai avrei immaginato di vedere su quei palchi. Parlo dei vari Jeffree Star, 3OH! e compagnia bella. Come vedi la situazione?
Non sapevo neanche dell’esistenza di questi individui, cioè sono arrivato al Warped e ho visto che tutta sta gente aveva un grosso seguito. È pieno di gruppi che vedi sulle copertine dei giornali e poi magari non hanno neanche mai fatto un tour. E’ una cosa vergognosa, una cazzata disumana.
 
Quindi sei d’accordo con Frank Carter dei Gallows, che recentemente durante una tappa del Warped ha mandato a quel paese tutta quella gente.Non so sei ha sentito.
Si, siamo diventati ottimi amici con i Gallows. Ci conoscevamo già, ma durante l’estate abbiamo condiviso lo stesso palco per lo stesso tempo e ci siamo trovati a meraviglia con loro. Ricordo che Frank disse “Molte band che suonano qua non appartengono a questo tour e non c’è bisogno fare i nomi, ma lo faro’ lo stesso”. Ha sorpreso tutti, ma da lui certe cose sono da aspettarsi.
 
Seguo molto la scena canadese e devo dire che negli ultimi anni ha rafforzato la propria posizione e ha dato al mondo ottime band come voi, i Cancer Bats, i Protest the Hero e altre ancora. C’è qualche band pronta ad esplodere che ci consigli!
Certo! Vi consiglio gli Statues da Toronto, una band incredibile. Poi ci sono i Constantines, altra ottima band. Poi non so, i Moneen.
 
Suonano ancora?
Si sono usciti due mesi fa con il loro nuovo album. Siamo amici di vecchia data ancora prima di uscire dal Canada a suonare, dividiamo la stessa scena e le stesse esperienze. Sono dei veri amici.
 
Un ultima curiosità. Avete girato il vostro ultimo video “Born and Raised” in un ristorante cinese, con i tipici costumi della tradizione e le usanze. C’è qualche significato dietro?
(Ride) Non c’è un vero e proprio significato. Penso solo che Wade (chitarrista) ami talmente tanto quel ristorante che si trova fuori Toronto da proporci di girare il video li. Era la prima volta che entravo in quel locale. È stato divertente, e poi ci interessava solo fare un video in cui facevamo una performance, come del resto in Young Cardinals e nella maggiorparte dei nostri video.
 
Del resto siete una live band.
Definitivamente.
 
Avete in progetto un nuovo clip?
Si, gireremo un video per “The Northern” in quanto dopo due canzoni “veloci” ci vuole quella piu’ tranquilla che rispecchi la vera identità degli Alexisonfire.

Sono Chris Steele e vi invito a venire a vedere gli Alexisonfire durante questo tour e in futuro se ne avete la possibilità. Mi scuso in anticipo, ma si sa che il crowd è violento e che io non posso promettere di non finire con le mie ginocchia nei vostri occhi, facendoli sanguinare.

 
 
Hey Chris. Thanks for coming up. How’s going the Eastpak Tour?
It’s unbelieveble. We took some countries we never been before like Czech Republic, we coming up soon in Spain for the first time and we ll end up in Finland for the first time as well. By the way we had some up and down untill here. I don’t know if you heard about.
 
Yeah, I heard you had some problems with the tour bus. And that wasn’t the first time, isn’ it?
We were really excited to start with this new company. Big bus, comfortable bank and good ventilation too. I bought the new Tiger Woods 2010 for enjoy my free time. After 2 days we were heading the UK tour our bus suddenly brake up and we back to the one we used in the past. Arriving in Germany we back to the original of the beginning of the tour. We change 8 bus so far. And this morning, while we crosse dthe mountains, we stared 5 hours on the edge of the street. Lucky was early in the morning and we were sleeping.
 
However the bill of this tour is great.
It’s amazing. We toured with Anti-Flag a bunch before in North America and we met up for the first time Four Year STrong during this tour. Great Guys and good band.
 
I know that in the last 2 years everytime you play UK you do with The Ghost Of A Thousand.
These guys are incredible. Awesome band.
 
Reading to an old Alexisonfire’s interview, I noticed that you love playing Europe because the target of the kids is various.
That’s true and this tour is the best example. You can find us and The Ghost Of A Thousand as pretty much heavy band. There are Anti – Flag, punk rock and then Four Year Strong which sound more pop. In North America you got the risk to get annoying you and the people who’s coming at the show, for this we like to involve us in bill who attend bands coming from different style. At least even back in a club tour is more exaustive. We know at what time we have to play and not waking up and maybe playing after 30 minutes. And after 53 shows straight outdoor, you do love playing in.
 
Let’s talk about your last record. I swear I had more time than for the past albums to get this one “mine”. What’s happened and what’s change into the band as human and as artist?
Well, we took definitely more time to do this album but just because we wanted a new record for rappresenting what Alexisonfire became and not just beacuse was the time. For Watchout! and for Crisis we took something like 2 months to  write ‘em down and recording, trying the different parts along the road or during soundcheck. For this last one, we decided to stop and sit to do a real work. Dallas and Wade took time to playing their side-project, the others to dedicate time to the family.
 
And is this the way you would like to follow?
For this album, yes.
 
When I listen to “Young Cardinals” for the first time, it was sounding to me like St.Catherines, the band. Maybe for the drumming, faster than in the past and for the voice of George.
Oh,really? Yeah! I can see that!

“We are not he kids we used to be” and “Don’t wish for yesterday” are two phrases that hit me. Are you rejecting your past? Or you are showing the world “Here we are the new Alexisonfire”.
In a way. I always been gratifing with my past experience and from which I came. But when I listen to the 2001′s songs, whene we were 5 kids coming from different bands and we wanted to smash the world, I realize there is anything that you can connect with the others. Everyone were still following thei roots and we never evene care to find a proper chorus. So, look to what I do! We grew up and it was the time to show this.
 
So, nowadays, Alexisonfire are Old Crows or Young Cardinals?
Today?mmm…. good question! I say a both of them. We are still the old Alexisonfire. Maybe the change could appear drastic, but we didn’t change the attitude. Sure “we are not the kids we used to be” , but old Alexisonfire in new dress.
 
Recently, during the Warped tour, showing up people who never I thought to see on these stages like Jeffree Star and OH3!. What do you think about it?
I really even know the existence of those bands. I came to Warped and then I see that those guys had a lot of following. In North America is full of band that you can find on the cover of a magazine and maybe they never even tour. Just bullshit.
 
So you agreed with Frank Carter from Gallows. I don’t know if you saw his performance during a event of Warped, when he slaghs off all those people.
We knew Gallows before, but just last summer we became friends and we hanged out together. We shared the Hurley Stage for all the shows we did and I remeber Frank saying “There are bands here who don’t belong to this tour. It’s not the case to mention their name, but I will”. He broke the side.
 
I’m following a lot the canadian scene and in the last few years it grown up a lot in the world through bands like you, like Cancer Bats, Protest the Hero and many more. Would you like to suggest us some others band?
Of course. There are Statues from Ontario, incredible band check’em out. The the Constantines, another great band. Moneen..
 
Are they still playing?
Yeah, they came out with their new record 2 months ago. We are very good friend with them. we grew up in the same scene and we already played together before touring out of Canada.
 
A last question about your recent videoclip “Born and Raised”. You play in a chinese restaurant. Is there some meaning about?
I just think in my mind that Wade loves so much that restaurant out of Toronto that he proposed to us to make the clip there. It was funny and we like so much performance in the video.
 
Maybe because you are a live band.
We definitely are.
 
You always made more than 2 videos for all your records. Is there something else on working?
We’ll do “The Northern” next, coz we want represent the best the sound of Alexisonfire. So, 2 fast song and 1 slow.
